    Land Clearing

I believe Franny's comment was in regards to a tropical rain forest and not a temperate forest.

    Large pine removal advice

It sounds like you are very committed to climbing and removing the trees from the top down. You had mentioned the fence was one of the main reasons for doing this. Would it be easier and cheaper just to take a section of the fence down and drop the trees whole? I know that sometimes it is...

Dangerous tree in need of expert opinion

I am always amazed by people who either buy a house or rent a house/mobile home space next to a tree then start demanding every tree in the vicinity be cut down because it is a hazard. If you drive a car on the road you have a much better chance of death or serious injury in a vehicle crash...

    Deodar Cedar or Spruce/Pine?

The bark looks like some kind of pine. It is definitely not an incense cedar or a deodar. True cedars have a stringy bark.

    Grandpa splitting kindling!

What I see in that video is a man who has probably worked in the woods with an ax all his life. To call him reckless of foolish is just ignorant. I can remember watching a home movie of my great grandfather from back in the 40's. He had worked in woods and mills of Maine since he was a young...

Covering/securing firewood in bed of truck during transport.

Getting back to the original question I will use a piece of 6'x5' field fencing to cover a load of firewood. Secure the front and back well and you don't have to worry about and wood bouncing out on the road. It is cheap and easy.

    Digger or Grey Pine

So is it your tree or someone else's? If it is yours and you don't like it then have it removed. I will say that digger pines are not the most attractive tree and do little for shading a property or adding any value. I have not seen them shed limbs like the valley and black oaks that share...

SO, Do You Like BIG Splitters?

Sunrise is a family owned construction company in Redding, CA. That is the owner of the company. They grind them up along with any other woody debris and sell it to the local co-generation plant. Getting rid of stumps is generally a big pain. They figured out a way to avoid dump fees and...

    Cutting a havy leaner

It looks like you did an nice job getting the tree down. I can't comment on that too much because that is not my profession. I do know quite a bit about working in the road and the dangers to the both motorists/pedestrians/cyclist and also the workers. In general I would say that tree...

    Stove Maintenance Lessons Learned

I don't think the original poster had a creosol problem. It sounds like the screen at the top of the chimney got clogged up which is a very common occurrence where you have the hot smoke coming in contact with the cold air. The soot tends to cling to the screen and clog the small openings...

    'yellow paint'

Did the tree have any issues? I to live in northern CA and the line clearance company usual just trims any branches that have grown into the clearance area or they will top small trees under the lines. Generally the only time they do a removal is if the tree has died. I always figured that...

    Craigslist Ugly Spray-painted 046/066?

If it is just regular rattle can spray paint carb cleaner will take it right off and it won't have much of an effect on the plastic and factory paint.

    Arming Maine Forest Rangers

I am not sure if anyone actually read the article. I quote "The bill, supported by the state’s forest rangers, seeks to arm and train those rangers, who are already considered law enforcement officers." The bill is to arm law enforcement officers, not foresters, maintenance workers or private...

    10 acres - Need guidance

I had about 5 acres of brush cleared by a gentleman with an ASV and a masticator. It was extremely dense with mature trees, small trees, heavy brush and poison oak. There were also some rock outcrops. He had it down in about a day and a half and charged about $1500. This was two years ago...

University Of Maryland Forest Dynamics Map

Pretty cool. At least in Northern California you can really tell where some of the big fires have been. Older ones are blue and the newer in red.

    Municipality bid

Purchasing and procurement of services are both items covered in the City's Municipal Code. These are the rules that they are supposed to use. Most cities' municipal codes are online. If not online you can probably go to the City Clerk's office to get a copy of it. Read through it and see if...

    What The Heck?

I don't know how it works down where you are but it I assume that your county commissioners are elected officials. Generally gentleman farmers with way too much time on their hands. They don't do any actual work, usually just show up to things, kiss babies, shake hands and sit on committees...

    Nrcs

For a 100 acres that seems like a pretty good deal if he does anything near as much as the forester did for me. When I had my plan prepared the forester cruised the property and surveyed the trees to determine how much timeber I have. He walked the property in a grid pattern and would stop a...

I don't think there is any penelty if you don't meet the contract goals. You just won't get paid for the work you didn't do. They don't have anything other than a bit of time invested in your project since you get paid only for work completed. I think it is up to you to put together any deals...
