    question for dealers

As far as I know the dealers cannot return saws to the factory any saws that are warrantied out are returned to the distributor and probably thrown away i don't think they reuse saws thats ridiculous.

    question for dealers

Just like any product thats why there is a warranty on it. People still assemble the parts and there is no way to guarantee that everything is perfect every time that is what a warranty is in place for. Thats why you spend the money on STIHL. If you buy a car and the stereo doesn't work you...

who made the first modern chainsaw?

In 1929, Stihl patented the first gasoline-powered chainsaw called the tree-felling machine. These were the first successful patents for hand-held mobile chainsaws designed for woodcutting. Andreas Stihl is most frequently credited as being the inventor of the mobile and motorized chainsaw. He...

    What does "X" mean?

the first digit in the serial number is country of origin. If its an older saw its possible that it was left off there was a time that stihl did that. Post the serial number.

Rim & Drum vs Spur Sprocket

That way when the sproket wears out you just replace the rim instead of having to replace the entire clutch drum.

    Stihl bench mount filing fixture?

Ive hear it can be kinda combersome to use. I tried one out once and it wasn't too bad but it is pricey. Anything that your going to use to service multiple chains i would stay with an electric grinder.

Stihl "ONLY REGULAR GASOLINE MAY BE USED"

When the 090 came out at that time it was recommended to use it. With the fuels, oils and emissions of that time thats all it needed I would use mid grade now for best results.

    Stihl Ignitions???

Stihl ignition warranty since 1985 has covered the ignition module as long as the trigger module is intergrated into the ignition coil. (non points) it would cover parts only at this point. Starting March 2003 5 year warranty 2 years parts/labor and the last 3 part only. The only problem is you...

    What caused this failure?

Even the carbon on top of the piston that looks like it has more time on it than one use just my oppinion. Carbon scoring is when the carbon builds up on top of the piston or the in the exhaust port and starts to flake off or break down. It mixes with the oil that is on the piston and you...

    What caused this failure?

If that was a new piston it sure has a lot of carbon build up for being test run and then run one time after that. Also it looks like on the intake side of the piston the machine marks are wore off the rings already and the intake side of the piston skirt sure doesn't have much for machine marks...

    Octane Gas

use 89 or higher. In that old of a saw ethenol may swell some of the rubber components it would be best to try and find some that is label non oxygenated or contains no ethenol.

    Ethanol wash problems

Again it is a FEDERAL mandate that fuels in the U.S CANNOT contain more than 10% Ethenol unless otherwise marked. The tests that are available to most delaerships are a test to see if there is ethenol in the fuel it is not alway 100% accurate as well. There are some blender pumps showing up in...

    Ethanol wash problems

It is a federal mandate that fuel can not contain more than 10% Ethenol unless otherwise posted. Ethenol is nothing new it has been used at 10% ratios since the early 80's. Im originally from MN and every station has had 10% ethenol as state mandate since I remember. Only issues with ethenol is...

    290 Rattle

Is it a new saw or a used saw. Could possibly be the clutch bearing needs to be greased. Is the chain spinning while at idle or hopping at idle could be worn out clutch or idle speed set to high.

    Kickback not working? (Stihl)

Its always reccomended to start the saw with the brake on but as soon as the saw starts to come up in high idle lock grab the throttle and release it to disengage the saw from high idle. Then disengage the chain brake when ready to start cutting. It is not a good idea to leave it in high idle...
