    First Aid Kit

First aid kit is a great idea and arguably a necessity if you spend time in the woods with chainsaws. I have a kit I keep in my truck that has been very useful on several occasions. The commonly used items are things like band aids (all shapes & sizes), Advil, antibiotic ointment, tweezers, and...

Split elm on a cold day

I just finished splitting about 1.5 cords of Elm a few weeks ago. It had been down for 3 years but is still plenty wet. The trick I use to split Elm in warm weather is to split slabs off of the outside and spiral your way to the center. Never had a problem using this technique. Trying to split...

Tree service owner killed in western Mass.

I believe he was a third generation tree cutter...very sad. EAST LONGMEADOW - Police have identified a 28-year-old Southwick man killed by a falling tree on Donamor Lane Thursday afternoon as Tyler Granfield. Police were summoned to a residence on Donamor Lane shortly after 3:30 p.m. for a...

How much firewood do you keep just outside your house, and how do you keep it dry?

I built a "wood shed" just 15' outside my back door. It measures 4'x8' with a roof, 3 sides and is open in the front. The wood gets stacked 6' high in it (1.5 cords). The rest of my wood is stacked in the side yard and we restock the woodshed with my MF 202 loader. If we are careful about...

    Weekend Report

I spent Saturday helping my buddy collect firewood. He has an OWB but only about a 2 cord supply on hand. He got sidelined with knee surgery this summer so wood was not a priority. He has an old friend that is clearing a bunch of old fields and has piles of trees he cut down last Spring. We...

My wood stove saved my ass but need a Diesel generator recommendation.

Iron Man, I feel your pain..I was working in Longmeadow during that last storm and it was a bite in the butt! At home I was running on generator for 6 days and 20 hours. I have an old 5KW Generac unit powered by an 11 hp Briggs & Stratton. I burned about 8 gallons of gasoline a day. The...

Alright.. Fess up.. Who's NOT ready?

I think I am in a similar boat with the rest of you. I have about 5 cord of Red Oak split and stacked for two years. Depending on when I start burning it may be just enough to get me through the winter. I would be far more comfortable if I had another cord or two sitting in reserve...just in...

    Did I miss something?

Yep..Ironman hit the nail on the head! The wife and I go about every 5 years...it takes about that long to save enough $$ for the day.

    Did I miss something?

I was wandering around the Eastern States Exposition last Friday (originally a big agricultural show in western Mass., now a great place to buy food that is bad for you and "hotel quality" sheets) and made a point to visit the state and federal dept. of agricultural booths. There was a lot of...

Ladies and Gentlemen, listen up.This is a serious post and you all need to read it.

Sorry to hear that you are sick but very glad to hear that it isn't far worse! I wish I could say this is the first time that I've ever heard this story..but it isn't. I've heard similar tales over the past 20 years and can't imagine the number of cases that never get properly diagnosed. The...

    Insert replacement

Not sure what you mean by a sealed glass door. However, I am currently looking very hard at a Jotul C350 or C450. I just need to figure out which body part goes up for sale on ebay...:D

how many cord will a tw5 or tw6 splitter split in one hour

I have to agree that there are MANY variables. We have a TW-6 with a 4-way wedge. If the wood is straight and the diameter is just right for a single pass through the splitter..and we have enough guys (one feeding, one operating and one tossing/stacking) then we are at 1-1.5 cord an hour...

    Help with 35t Huskee

+1:good: I recently had the very same problem with the B&S engine on my generator and diagnosed it the same way. I pulled it apart and, for the cost of a head gasket, was able to clean the carbon from the exhaust valve. It now runs like a top again.

    My woodhauling Sub is down

Without knowing the actual fuel pressure, my money is on "a bad pump." I have an '89 GMC C3500 with a 7.4 TBI and a 2000 Chevy C2500 with the 5.7 Vortec engine. I have replaced fuel pumps in both trucks, the '89 got an after-market pump and the 2000 got a Delco pump. If I ever have to replace...

    CO detectors

Great question! Start by checking what your rules and regulations require. It makes no sense to spend money on a detector if it doesn't meet the code. With that being said, I suggest you get a unit that is AC powered with a battery back-up. I also will second the suggestion to get one with a...

    Wood kiln

I've thought about building a solar kiln for seasoning firewood... Basically I'd start with a 20' shipping container. Then I'd install a vent in the roof and cut air inlets along the sides, down low. Finally I'd paint is flat black and plunk it in the middle of my pasture for maximum sun...

    Warning...doom, death, & danger!

I know there are a lot of folks on this forum that have truckloads of logs delivered that are then processed into firewood. We have had 3 loads delivered that way and there is nothing like working your way through the pile of logs..first turning them into rounds, then into stacks of split...

    Weekend Cherry

There is prolly another 6 pieces (about 4" in dia)that are worth our time. The rest of the tree is unbelievably rotten and useless for firewood. I'll just end up pushing it into the treeline at the edge of the field. As for my grandson's PPE...it's already back in the truck...and he's hiding...
