    Winch Project

I do use a stand alone battery mounted on the tongue, and a charging cable tied to the truck battery system to help keep the battery charged. I am pretty busy right now, but when I get a chance I will try to get more pics of the bulkhead and stuff, It isn't in the trailer right now cause I'm...

    Winch Project

I mounted the winch plate at the bottom of the channel iron A-frame tongue, which is mounted under the main frame of the trailer, so the cable comes off the drum and goes under the trailer frame with little drag. If needed, you could use a roller fairlead to guide it. I run the cable above the...

    Winch Project

Yeah, I don't have any better pics. but it really works well since I doubled the pull and used it more to get the hang of it, but when you are on level ground, you can leave the truck in neutral and as the pile builds up behind, it pushes the whole rig forward, making room to finish unloading. I...

    Winch Project

Here is a link to a crappy video of the unload, before I doubled the line pull. You can hear the winch pulling pretty hard, and it's not a very big load. It works better now. YouTube - Firewood trailer unloading

    Winch Project

Winch unloading firewood I have a 16 foot tandem I built that I have a bulkhead made that I pull back with a harbor freight 8000 lb. winch. I have the winch mounted up front on the tongue, run the cable back under the trailer, around a pulley at the rear to change direction, then forward to the...

Anybody Got a John Deere 2305 tractor?

On the other hand, if you disregard the naysayers, and have realistic expectations, you can do some skidding with CUT's. (compact utility tractors) Utilizing a skidding arch, either a pull type one or a small three point one, you can move a lot of wood. You need to be looking at some of the pull...

    Thermal mass heat storage

Instead of using a pressurized tank you could use a plate exchanger and a circulator pump to transfer the heat from your pressurized boiler to an unpressurized storage tank, and back again. As long as the water is circulated through the plate exchanger, it will try to equalize with the boiler...

    long distance wood?

I try to stay under about 30 milesone way. I haul with a tandem axle trailer 16' long so I get over a full cord on a load, on about 5 gallons of gas @12mpg. I figure it's alot of wood for $15 of fuel. I'll go a little further if it's good roads etc. I get wood for free on logging landings. My...

    Apples too Apples For OWB

One thing to remember is that you are not just pumping water up hill. You are circulating water in a closed loop. The water coming back down one side helps pull the water up the other, just like a siphon. For the most part, you don't have to worry much about elevation on a loop, more just...

    E Classic 1400 - Getting Close

Yeah, thats why I still turn off the breaker. I can figure it out, I just won't!!! Too lazy after the initial install. Wow, 3 years ago already!? I don't remember if I double checked to see if the gas backup will come on...maybe I should check. Some guys use an aquastat in the boiler loop and...

    E Classic 1400 - Getting Close

upsnake, you are probably backfeeding the relay on the central A/C , causing the compressor to come on. Mine does this too. Nothing wrong with the thermostat, but you may need another control relay in the circuit. On mine I just turned off the 220 breaker for the A/C unit. The 24 volt control...

    Trailer frames and ratings

Jimbo, Thanks for not taking offense, I wasn't out to make you mad, just make the half ton point. Sometimes the humor doesn't make it in print!! I use a dodge half ton with the little v-8 and a home built tandem utility style trailer, and 8000 or so is plentyyyy of weight behind it. In...

    Trailer frames and ratings

KMB, Just my opinions, but here they are anyway. Be careful not to option your way out of price range, any of the tandem utilities will do the job for you. The angle frames with 1 foot side frames use lighter materials and use the side as a truss to gain strength without excessive weight...

    OWB thermostat question

Yeah, I think its more involved than needed. Thats the purpose of having a large volume of water is so you don't need real close control of the heat source, you can't turn it on and off like a propane burner.
