Sawing with a crosscut: a lost art?

I spent a summer working for an outfitter in the Bob Marshal. We cut all the firewood with a crosscut, it was a hard work but honestly I was surprised at how well it worked. The outfitter kept the saws sharp, and we could make a lot of firewood in a day.

    machete

They look awesome! I have been thinking about one of them, but I've only seen them in catalogs or online. I have a hard time dropping $70-$80 on a chopping tool I've never actually seen or handled.

    machete

I'm in need of another machete for brushing. I've been using a military surplus one made by ontario knife works. I don't have any complaints with it, but was just wondering if anyone who uses machetes might know of something even better? Thanks.

    Your first?

First I ran was a little top handle stihl, just trimmed a few boards when we were building a corral. First I put any real time on was a Homelite XL12. First I bought was a Homelite 340.

Some considerations for the dial-up members...

Wow! The satellite service I'm using is $56 a month. Fairly expensive but well worth it since I have to quite a bit of work online.

Some considerations for the dial-up members...

I understand the frustration of dial-up and pictures and agree that a warning in the post title such as (pics) might be a good idea. Satellite works great, I've been using it for a couple years now. It's the only option to dial-up in my area. The cost is not that bad now, and is, IMO...

    D**n snakes!!!

You're right, the mojave rattlesnakes (crotalus scutulatus) do have neurotoxic venom, considered one of the most toxic snake venoms in the new world, about 10 times more toxic than most rattlesnake venoms. We do have mojave rattlesnakes in this area, however I think this was more likely what...

    D**n snakes!!!

Had a good thunder shower here last evening so I thought I'd go cut a load of wood this morning while it was still damp and I wouldn't have to worry too much about starting a fire. I had a big oak that had been down for a while in a grassy area and I thought this morning would be a good time...

Weights and measures called me today

I did check into going "legit" here in California. What a nightmare! I don't think a small operator could make it. If you were retailing wood you'd have to have a full-time bookkeeper just to keep track of sales tax. Not only do we have a State sales tax but most munincipalities (and some...

Bundled wood $2. dollars a bundle

We're selling strictly oak at this time. The largest order we've had so far has been 100 bundles we charged $3/bundle. We have a minimum order of 50 bundles unless it is a local delivery. We started selling bundles in May of this year (wrong time of year but that's when we got set up to...

Light and fan on my wood splitter?

 It works great!! I've been just jury rigging one up, but a friend of mine is building a bracket to mount to his splitter that will hold the umbrella and be adjustable so he can tilt the umbrella for max. effect. :greenchainsaw:

i caught a fish this big (beaver thread solved)

Check the legality of using the body grip trap first. I many states they are illegal out of water (especially the 220 & 330). If another critter, like the neigbors dog or cat, comes along and sticks it's head down the hole, THWACK!!! :jawdrop: It can definitely make for some problems. A...

Bundled wood $2. dollars a bundle

Arlen, according to my math you have just over 1cf in your bundles (the product of your dimensions divided by 1728 which is the number of inches in a cubic foot). BTW, I'm no math expert so I may be doing this wrong, if so hopefully someone will point it out. I'm in San Diego County also and...

Separate "create a lean" backcut with wedge?

Thanks. I appreciate the responses. I guess I just kinda took for granted that this guy actually knew what he was doing. He worked for a pretty big logging/construction outfit and certainly cut a lot of small stuff while brushing roads, right of ways, etc.

Separate "create a lean" backcut with wedge?

Andy (or anyone else), can you tell me why? Please don't think I'm being confrontational here, I'm just trying to learn something. The head cutter on the brush crew told me that they only used the angled backcut on smallish trees without much lean. I understand that it would not be safe...

Separate "create a lean" backcut with wedge?

When I started working in the woods I noticed the brush crews using a method with trees like this that seemed to work pretty well. I've used it quite a bit with smaller trees and never had a problem yet. They would cut a wedge on the side they wanted the tree to fall, then make an angled...
