Has anyone made a hoist or lift to help process firewood?

I have a kubota B7100 that isn't quite big enough to pull a trailer with a cord of wood. I *do* like that it as a tiny turning radius. 16 HP. It runs out of traction, so putting larger tires on the trailer would help it get over bumps, stumps and roots. I'm looking at a 22 HP replacement...

    Birch for firewood

Birch MUST be cut and split. The bark is waterproof. (Think birchbark canoe) and the tree will rot. I split birch to the point no point is more than 2 inches from the surface. Split a 4"-8 in half, 12" in quarters. if you store well ventilated under cover with good air flow in a dry...

    The Beg for Manuals Thread

Well, I could... Right now it starts after 10 bulb presses, 4 pulls on full choke, then 3-8 pulls on half choke. But once it's run for 10 minutes, it won't start again until it;s cooled for an hour. OTOH: This is my first attempt at chainsaw surgery. On the third hand, I recently bought a...

    [cs-590] Hoping for some specific B&C suggestions, the longest & most-aggressive a 590 can push :)

Here in Alberta. I have a Stihl MS392 with an 18" bar. Now an then I wish for a bigger bar. Not often. I recently picked up a Stilh MS170 with a 16" bar, and I'm wishing that I had a shorter bar on it. It's a lot lighter, and I love it for limbing, but even 16" gets in the way a lot. Maybe...

    The Beg for Manuals Thread

Yeah. Found that one once before. Problem: how do I get a *218468-01 user manual. According to that there was no service manual. What's my next step?

Stacked versus loose: It doesn't make that much difference. It's hard to compute, and in practice you do it by test. With gravel, the air space is about 28%. I suspect with a wood pile it would be somewhat higher at maybe 35%. But neatly stacked wood will still have air space in it...

    Chain tightening

My rule of thumb is to reverse the bar and do general saw maintenance when I have to mix a new gallon of fuel. For me, it takes a pretty solid day to use a gallon

Fall colours not as bright this year in Ontario, Canada. The reason? Climate change :P

We had a pretty good fall here in Central Alberta. Sugar maples are *really* fussy about conditions. They often will go red on the outside of the canopy, and only yellow or orange inside. My current theory about that is harder frost on the outside. Three trees I planted the same year. "Lord...

A face cord is 4' x 8' by the length of the chunk. So if you are cutting 2' chunks for fireplace use, a face cord is 4x8x2 and is 1/2 full cord. If you are cutting 16" pieces for a wood heater, it would be 1/3 of a full cord. If you are cutting 12" pieces for an old style wood range, or a...

Sawbuck for Douglas Fir limbs and small trees, version 2.0

I have something similar. * Mine isn't symmetrical. The back side rises about a foot higher. I can stack more wood. * The base has 4 X's an is sized to fit in a Peavey Mart 4' calf sled. This makes it easy to move around in winter. * I've tacked n 8' piece of 1x2 to the back uprights and put...

    Are chains cheap? And why?

FWIW: My local Stihl dealer chains run about $35 for 1, but if you buy two or more at the same time you get 30% off, so effectively $25. These are Canadian dollars, so they are already 30% smaller than Ameribucks.

    Is the website "www.stihl-usa.online" legit.

So far I've yet to find a *.online website that isn't trash. At this point I'm always suspicious of domains that aren't .com, .edu, .gov or in some cases .co.uk, and .ca. Being a 'blessed' domain isn't a true sign of goodness, but not being one gets considerably more scrutiny.

What tool did you use to find the other sites that are hosted on the same IP? Domaintools.com seems to be a pay for use site.

    Trying to optimize firewood processing

Some comments on an interesting thread: 1. I never stack. My woodshed is split in half. each side holds 8-9 cords. Sides are made of pallets, so there's good air flow through the shed. Stacking is too time consuming. 2. I cut and split in the bush. I have a sawbuck about 5 feet log (4...

No. It won't hurt Canada in the long run. The biggest problem Canada has right now is the degree of dependence of trade with the U.S. Right now, if the U.S. collapses into anarchy and civil war (quite likely, watching the present news...) it drags Canada down with it. Were I Justin Trudeau...

Fuels: pump gas vs alkylate vs aviation.

This is the way it should be. I have 4 teens who work on my tree farm. 3 hunt. Two with bows. In Canada you can carry an unloaded long arm in your vehicle -- unloaded. I'm starting into this. I have a .22 with scope and a Lee Enfield .303 from WWII. Some deer that have been eating my...

McCullock PM145-14 for collector, Edmonton, Alberta Area.

Thanks. Wasn't sure what collector status definition was for saws. What is the defintion? While used, it's not been used hard, as far as I can tell. Pointers for manuals or it?

McCullock PM145-14 for collector, Edmonton, Alberta Area.

This saw works. Sort of: Runs well when you get it going. Has to cool completely if it stops. Hates starting in cold weather. I lost patience with it. This morning I realized that the 4 high school kids helping me do the year's firewood were costing me $240/afteroon (4 hours) and a new...
