firewood cutting with a bad back

My Huskies are heavy saws a move I make that keeps my back straight is as follows; While keeping my back straight I bend with both knees and put my right elbow on my right thigh as I cut. If you can work while always keeping your back straight that the right move. also when I'm in the woods...

firewood cutting with a bad back

I have a bad back and like the OP, cut on our own property. I use a 20 or 24 in bar, depending. I make a lot of tip cuts, bending by the knees trying to keep back straight. Hand file chains as needed, removed the toothed dogs to lessen the risk of torking saw threw a cut. We...

Any baby boomers still heat with wood?

We still heat with firewood... ...just came in from throwing ashes on the driveway. Sure the propane stove still fires up but the heat isn't as satisfying as wood.

Stihl HT 101 Pole saw review- Do you have one?

I have one that also comes in handy when I cut small trees/brush down the creek banks that borders the place. ...as an aside if you don't cut the brush it hands down into the water catches flotsam and eventually restricts the flow of water, and that can be a problem. I absolutely detest the...

Is this one of YOU Guys?

I would fall in the line behind the small blue box. Around here we call that a face cord. Real cord dimensions when out when the railroads stopped buying wood from local farmers...so I was told by an old timer that schooled me on the how to's of wood burning around the bicentennial.

Will a chimney cap hinder stove draft?

I would never put one on because it allows the smoke to cool in the chimney and collect creosote... ...now that's just my theory; I dunno what effect it will have on drafting.

Fall colours not as bright this year in Ontario, Canada. The reason? Climate change :P

The old timers around ere concluded the really wet fall made the leaves too heavy with moisture to dry sufficiently and color up.

    Best way to season firewood

In my experience here in CNY split wood needs morning sun or it will grow moss and deteriorate.

    It Was Going Well Until...

I think what you think... ... the problem is related to the replacement blanket installation. For that I'd recommend visiting https://www.**********/talk/forums/the-hearth-room-wood-stoves-and-fireplaces.6/ for an expert opinion. good luck and happy holidays.

    Outbuilding Maintainer Heating

If it were me I use one of those plug in 'delonge' electric radiators.

Bucking limbs and small (3-4” diameter) sticks

I tip cut a lot ...it's easier on my back.

I could have used a little more bar...

Defiant trees are a real hair raising work out. Back in the bi-centennial when I first started wood cutting I started keeping an extra bar and chain as insurance.

    Cautious in my old age.

My dad use to say ya gotta make hay while the sun shines... ...but I see your point with all the wild fires currently raging.

What type chain for my situation

While dirt may dull a chain, sand/gravel is the real show stopper for chains. I'd go with an aggressive pro chain that you, yourself can hand sharpen...often as needed. Another thing, those bigger stumps that are say on a future drive pathway, use the saw tip to tic tac toe # the stumps. they...

Will felling and leaving the tree for a couple of weeks help dry it out?

I've been told that a fallen leafed tree will suck moisture out of a tree until the leafs dry then the drying by leafs is over... ...but who really knows.

    When to change hydraulic oil?

On a splitter never, on a hydrostatic tractor twice.

    Removing big stump

That close to the house I would use a stump grinder service...when they finish you can mow over it,

Creosote build up on chimney cap help

I would take the chimney cap off.

    Sharpening chain

As a wood cutter with a bad back I'm a long time tip cutter, which btw is dangerous in that it can cause a 'kick back'. As long as we know that then we are prepared. For a better tip cut you should file down the burrs on the bar especially the TIP with a flat file. That's it. About every 3'd...
