What would you do? Skil 1631/PM340

So, I was given a Skil 1631 (69cc). It's complete, including a muffler, which is a rare part I'm told. 16" bar and Skil plastic chain guard too. Full disclosure - not QUITE complete, it has a jury-rigged foam air filter. I can get it to run, but not very well. It starves for fuel - probably...

It's been said before - check the little things first ..... Stihl 029

I know it's been said often, but I got a great reminder last night. Check the little things first. I picked up an 029 yesterday that is in really good shape. I got it cheap. Owner said it had fuel problems, and even gave me a new fuel line he couldn't figure out how to install. Symptoms...

Chain saw stutters at full throttle - diagnosis please?

I have a chain saw that will start easily, idle well, and accelerate smoothly - until I get to almost full throttle. When I pass that magic mark close to full throttle, the saw will cut out and back in, almost like the ignition switch is being turned on and off. Occasionally, it won't cut back...

034 to 036 - What plastic top mods required?

So I know from Bailey's that I can bolt an 036 replacement P/C directly on to my 034. BUT, they tell me that there will need to be some "slight" modifications to the top plastic cover. What is involved in the "slight" modifications to make this switch? The target saw is an 034, not an 034...

Who has a muffler for Skil 1631?

Got a good looking and running Skil 1631 version 3 for free. 60 CCs. Great compression and great spark. BUT, someone grabbed the muffler off of it. WOW is it loud. Too loud. I need a muffler and mounting screws. Anyone have a set they can "part" with? I understand this is a...

Go ahead and flame me - but advice and advise are not the same word

Look guys, I know this isn't high school and these things are not huge, life threatening deals - but they are annoying. The mis-use of advice and advise is particularly annoying. Advise is a verb and is pronounced "ad-viz" (long "i"). It is the act of giving advice, a noun (pronounced ad-vis...

    Dolmar 111i - Cylinder source?

Got a Dolmar 111i off of Craig's list for $30 today. Nice saw, great shape, but was advertised as a "non-starter". Got 'er home and yep, 90 PSI. Muffler off and ...scored cylinder. I can get the piston and ring, but the cylinder must be made of "unobtainum" $200 for a cylinder???? I'm...

    Carb question ZAMA

OK, it's a Poulan 4018, but that shouldn't matter. ZAMA carb. The situation is this. Carb assembled correctly. Saw runs great after I installed a new cylinder and piston (I know, Poulan, but it was a hobby project and the saw was free to me). Saw idles well and revs well. Metering lever...

Honing a non-coated aluminum scored cylinder?

I'm messing around with a scored cylinder Poulan p4018. It's just for something to play with. I know about the bad things honing a plated cylinder can do, but what about honing some marks out of a non-plated cheapo aluminum one? Doable?

Stihl bar stud remove tool - need recommnedation!

OK, MS290 take down. Can't get the rear bar stud out. Tried heat and the double nut method, and only suceeded in stripping both the nuts and stud threads. The threads on the stud just aren't long enough for two nuts. Put the stud in a vise, and tried to turn the saw - no joy. Now I...

Painting plastic saws - A little help?

Ok, I got a Wild Thing for Christmas. I don't object at all to Poulan saws - any saw, working or not, can be a fun saw. But I do object to the crazy color scheme and so I set out to correct it. Painted the bar black with high-temp engine paint. All OK. Took the saw completely apart...

026 engine in an 024 "frame"??

Just for giggles, is there any reason I couldn't remove the engine from my 024 and replace it with a spare short block I have for an 026. Looking at the parts diagrams, the saws appear to be the same series. Obviously the parts numbers are different for the P/C replacements as they have...

Bent raker became broken raker ..... chian still OK to run ... right?

Cutting through old oak (been standing dead for at least 10 years) at my mother's place for her winter firewood. Working with the MS 361. Brought a spare chain that was a brand new STIHL full skip chain. When chain #1 started making small chips, I switched them out - now have chain #2 on the...

    Walbro HDC experts?

Working on a middle-aged Homelite with a Walbro HDC carb. Was rebuilding the carb, and damned if I didn't put a hole in the LITTLE screen filter that covers the main nozzle check valve. I'm NOT talking about the filter screen for the metering needle- that one is HUGE in comparision to this...

    Little Homelite Bandit running problems

Topic is a little Homelite Bandit. I believe the starter cover says "XL-30. Cute little little 12" bar-ed red plastic thing. Great for one-handed trimming. Put it away about two years ago (properly drained), at the time, it was running well. Got it out yesterday to do some trimming...

    MS 361 advice needed

Let me start by saying I don't get to saw very often. :msp_crying: Over two years ago, I bought an MS 361 because I heard they were going to stop making them. Ran it once in a large maple for about 1 tank of fuel, then put it away. Got to run it again yesterday in old dried oak for about...

Windosr replaceable bar tips at Bailey's

Hard to tell from Bailey's photos. I have two old Homelites; a 450 and a 360. The 450 has an old Windsor bar. The 360 has an old Homelite bar. Both have replaceable tips, both are exactly the same configuration of rivets (measured with a caliper) so I'm pretty sure they are both Windsors...

OLD Homelite 360 - experts out there?

Picked up an OLD Craftsman 4.5 today that is obviously a Homelite 360. Model number starts 517. and has the funky transformer on the plug. Looks just like all of the 360s I've seen except it has a manual oiler. I'm thinking it's old. Anyway, it needs a carb boot, old one is sticky black...

    026 cylinder/piston in an 024?

Just hypothetically speaking; if one had a replacement jug and piston for an 026, and had access to a straight-gassed 024, would one be able to install the 026 parts onto the 024 carcass as a straight swap-out for the old burned-up 024 jug/piston? The 024 is not (currently) a 024 Super. Hmmm?

Ok, again, how about Max MS290 RPM... but with a twist

Ok, so I love saws more than I NEED saws (see my signature). I have a "new" MS290 that has only been used for a few hours (like 2). It's out of warranty, so I did a muffler mod on it and re-tuned. I know the factory says something like 12,500 max RPM, but here's the twist. In reading...
