Heating options for new home construction

Dude I can't wait to get a gasifier-keep burning your 12 cords a year and I'll get by on two  Hey, look at it this way-you'll be in much better shape than me.

Twice in the last week,,, I swear

That's probably the most bizarre thing I've ever heard. Who the hell goes around asking for free wood? I'd move if I were you.

    hurray for skids!

If you use a level things tend to come out a little better: Just finished it last weekend-it'll hold just shy of 4 cords which gets me through a winter. The pallets were free of course, but the lumber only cost about $30 from the reject pile at Lowes. Technically there's the cost of the...

    Got gloves?

Check out my new furnace gloves: They're foundry gloves made of Zetex. Not only do they go all the way to the elbow, I don't need a poker to move splits around in the firebox! I can touch a flaming split just long enough to reposition it before I feel the heat through the double layer...

Wood stove hack-secondary burn tubes added

Nice job! I want to try something similar with my Englander. I priced out doing something similar (NPT style pipe through the front) in stainless and I should be able to get it done for under $100. Type 316 stainless steel pipe should last longer than my firebox!

    woodheat4me,this is for you!

Does anybody read these yarns and get the feeling that "Greg" is a walking stereotype? This guy talks like a cross between a Pilgrim and Carlton from the Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

    Stacks on a Diesel pickup

My daily driver/woodhauler is in my signature line. My truck is for transportation and work-period. My toolbox/60 gallon fuel tank takes up enough room in the bed. I can't imagine losing another 8" or so. As for the whole "courtesy to other drivers" bit, that's easy, don't dump gallons of...

    Craigslist laughs

http://cnj.craigslist.org/zip/1229538638.html This is a good one...come and take my rotted wood. I doubt it would even stay together if you tried to pick it up from the looks of it.

Have a new fireplace, Now unable to get wood

Sorry to hear about it. That's the one caveat with wood heat-which is why I try to take care of my back by not doing stupid stuff like straining/lifting improperly in order to get rounds that are way too heavy into my truck. Core exercises to strengthen the muscles in that area help too but it...

    cylinder repair

Yeah no need to get touchy. Go find yourself an old Chevy Chevette diesel engine to hitch that pump to and make a video of it splitting knotty elm crotches!

    Silver Maple / Firewood?

I picked up a bunch because the power company was cutting a new ROW along my route to work and cut a 24" diameter with some big main branches. The rounds were heavy as all get out which I later found out was because they were 90% water! The splitter really tore through them rather than...

How to evaluate the health of my maples

I have three large (Trunks are 24"-30" diameter at the base, 50'-60' tall) maples on one side of my property and I have some concerns about them. The rearmost tree is sort of misshapen-I'm thinking that at one time maybe the top broke off as it is lopsided compared to the other trees. The...

    Road Rage and chainsaws

I live in New Jersey and I'm a huge advocate for the right to carry which we currently do not have. The reason? Quite simply, public perception. Change public perception, change the law. Not to mention the issue I pointed to above-which HAS happened enough times in court for folks wishing to...

    Road Rage and chainsaws

I would say that your friend is pretty damn lucky. No matter what the guy's intentions really were it's generally NOT a good idea to start wailing on a septuagenarian no matter how sturdy they might look. If the guy's ticker was about to go and the shock of your buddy pounding his brains in...

    Welding propane tanks

Most 100lb tanks I've seen use 1/8" steel. With proper gusseting you'd probably be ok. I used a 100lb propane tank to create a "sucker" tank for waste vegetable oil. I use a vacuum pump to pull about 25" of vacuum on the tank which requires pretty stout construction. 15-16" of vacuum will...

    Welding propane tanks

The stuff you smell is mercaptan. It's a chemical that is added to propane and natural gas so that leaks can be detected. Natural gas and propane are completely odorless otherwise. It's not flammable or otherwise harmful, but it will stick around long after all of the gas is gone. You have...

    Geothermal

You don't need hot water unless you're trying to generate power. Geothermal works on the principle that once you get to a certain point below ground (it varies a bit depending on the region of the country you're in) the soil is a constant 55 degrees F all year round. Basically you're using the...

    KIlled one in the woodshed

I actually rescued a black snake a couple of years ago that had gotten tangled in some netting that was left underneath my folks' deck-he was probably chasing field mice. I saw the tail sticking out and when it didn't move even as I got close I thought it was dead. When I reached out to grab...
