    question for you mechanical loggers

    If I were you I would deffantly buy a slasher before a buncher. I always felt limbing, bucking and sorting were the most time consuming aspects of logging. 2 skidders cutting their own hitches can keep my hood fed all day as long as the skid isnt silly long. We run a cable and a grapple and...

    Skidder question

    I dont know an exact weight but they are HEAVY. a freind of mine has a 170 and it weighs more than my 460 tj and the timberjack is a whole size class bigger machine. i would stray away from a 405 they are pretty piggy

    fuel usage

    I run a hood with a circle saw about the size of the barko your talking about. When in slashing ill burn around 7-9 gal/hour depending on the size of the wood. loading trailers you can idle it down a bit and get down around 4-5gal/hr. a morbark 16 will be around 18-20 gal/hr if it has the big...

    Skidder question

    The 405's have 4 cyl cummins and a manual or powershift 4spd, little smaller in size to a 170. the 170s have a 6 bta with an 4spd power shift and bigger axles.

    Hardwood pulp

    I dont think youll see a price like that till spring time. Im at 36.50per in the 75 mile range to Finch add another 1.50 per ton for all the TLC and bs bonuses. Hemlock was creeping up there but it too has leveled out. Their yard is about 50% full and IP is only buying HW under contract.

    Skidder rebuild, { warning graphic pictures}

    A 6bt should fit with a manual trans. You would need to move your motor mounts forward a few inches and the clearance between the radiator and the fan is close, there are a few different fans you can run on the cummins and i would put the larger plastic one that runs off the idler pulley...

    Gone and done it

    T-40 JD winch with a good arch is what you need on that 550. you could rig a gearomatic to work but that would be a serious down grade from the JD winch. Call up schaefer equip in IL. they will set you up.

    If your talking about the ones in the ears on the rear half of the center section, they are just pressed in. beat them out with a sledge and carefully smack the new ones in using the old ones to hit against

    3/4 pitch chain question

    I had a Bell with a dangle head that ran 3/4 and i would get cuts like that once in a while. I found that when i ground my rakers down that if i took a little off the sides it helped, allows the chain to tip out alittle more in the cut.
