    My new MS241cm has shipped!

This is similar in size, weight, and power to the 026 and 260, right?

More knock off Chinese Stihls sighted

There are Chinese cases too now. Ifr you search Hutzl chainsaw parts, you can get an idea of what's out there. I'm curious as to how good the MS361 knockoff is, since it mimics a model that is actually better than what Stihl currently sells.

Poulan pro strato NOT lined cylinder?

So I started trying to clean up the cylinder on the PP4218avx that I was working on... And I believe it's got an unlined cylinder! I thought the Pros were supposed to be Durachrome... If it's chrome lined, I'm not seeing it. Have you ever taken one of these apart?

Top reasons not buy a 290 farmboss

I believe the ms290 is/was the (stated) hp/dollar champ among quality saw brands. And with a muffler mod, they can probably actually put out that power, lol. Downside: big and heavy and a pain to work on.

How can you tell pro stihl saws from homeowners?

    What about the MS280 ?

How can you tell pro stihl saws from homeowners?

For the older saws: just look for a gap between the air filter cover and the top cover. Only exception is the 270/280 class, but those are odd ducks anyway. The newer 261 or 441 type saws lost this distinction, though.

    029 Base Bolts

I think I got my diamond set at Harbor Freight fairly cheap. It still took a miserable amount of time, if I recall correctly.

Bored carbs and higher than average idle!?

If the saw sits around idling for too long, the carb gets bored and decides to rev it up a little? o_O

Porting Stihl 026? Power gains more then MS290?

Yeah, they look like they are in good shape. I think you did pretty good on that deal.

    029 Base Bolts

I snapped off a tip in one of those and had a terrible time getting it out. I ended up drilling through it using some diamond-coated Dremel bits.

Porting Stihl 026? Power gains more then MS290?

Stihl ms290: 13.0 lbs Stihl 026: 10.8 lbs Power-wise, I believe they are pretty close with the edge actually going to the 290. Round here, I think either would go on CL for $175-200. Probably the ms290 is worth a bit more $$$, just because it is newer. I'm a much bigger fan of the 026, though!

    Stihl/Pferd EZ-file

It also automatically takes down the "rakers" at the same time that you're filing. The height for the depth gauges (rakers) is set based on the cutter height, so it seems pretty foolproof.

    Stihl/Pferd EZ-file

Have you seen this new chain file doo-dad? Here's the Pferd version: https://www.baileysonline.com/Chainsaws/Files-Filing/Filing-Guides/Pferd-CS-X-Chain-Sharp-Filing-Guide---7-32.axd It's basically two Pferd Chain Sharp combo chain/depth gauge files stuck back-to-back. I just bought the...

What do you think is the perfect chainsaw for firewood say between 6-14"s?

026 Stihl is pretty close to perfect, IMO: light weight decent power durable easy to work on tons of parts available easy to find used at a good price Sure, a 346XP NE might have a bit more pep, and better AV, and a smarter air filter. But you can't find 346XP NE's on craigslist for $150-200...

Putting a new piston in a PP4218... any tips?

^ I got a set of three 026's (well, one was a 260 Pro) from a lawnmower shop a few years ago. I was able to fix all three and get them all running, too. It was great! Same shop sold me a $5 box of "parts" that had a good used 029 P&C -- which I needed for another fix. woot! But I think...

Putting a new piston in a PP4218... any tips?

I'm not familiar with saw junkyards...? Can you explain more how I could find a "scrapyard" of saws?

Putting a new piston in a PP4218... any tips?

Got it all taken apart now... the needle-nose Vice-Grips did the trick. To make it clear, the second pair of Vice-Grips were clamping across the jaws of the needlenose set; they were not clamping the needlenose jaws together. Also, I used a cordless impact on the flywheel. looks to me...

Stihl 028 - What I need to know...

I know this thread is is little off course, but I strongly prefer the 026 to the 028 Super. In the 028's favor, it has a nice gear-driven oiler design, but the 026 has it beat on weight, parts availability and (slightly) ease to work on. Power is very close. Round here the price for a 028 and...
