    Skidder rebuild, { warning graphic pictures}

clark I've run a 664B alot and loved it but I had never heard of a 644 model. Is it smaller? Didn't think you could get much more compact than the 664 which makes it a pain in the a$$ to work on.

Wedge tip for bore cutting backleaners

I didn't go to school to "learn how to put a tree on the ground", I learned that from a guy thats been cutting wood for 30 years and has made a living cutting 10-20" poles. In the NE we don't cut trees that have the volume like you do outwest, so the quality of the tree is much more important...

Wedge tip for bore cutting backleaners

bore Up here the CLP teaches the bore cut as the primary way to cut. Cut the face, if its a large tree bore the front from the middle, bore in from the side stick a wedge in, undercut beneath the wedge and drop the tree. Leaving the last bit of hold wood allows for a stand so the tree can't...

not much of a face cut

anyone thats cut hardwoods professionally in the east can attest to the bore cut. I wasn't sold of it at first but it saves you loosing the but of the log because a small face cut is accepted by the scalers. It also gives you alot more control on medium sized trees 8 -25 inches dbh if your going...

If You Were A Skidder, Which One Would You Be?

lombard log hauler I like to live life on the edge http://steamtraction.farmcollec.tor.com/Farm-Shows/Lombard-Steam-Log-Hauler.aspx nothing like riding on the front of a couple hundred thousand pounds of pulpwood going down hill on skis with no brakes

Should I hire a pro or DYI?

I'd take a measure of the height first and see if it can reach the shop or not. That top would wreck that shop in a hurry. I would deffinetly bore cut it if you know how too so keep that butt from kicking back into your house.

    Cutting oak in the spring

You'll find it more commonly in soft woods but trees if they grow up tight without of space will have their roots graft. When you cut the tree down the stump starts to rot and goes into roots and eventually into the roots of the other tree causing that tree to rot from the inside and die. Its...

    Holy Husqvarna!

Heres a thought, don't go either way and get a Johny-Red 2171. Cheaper than a 372 and it keeps these stihl guys off your back cause they know their stihls can't touch it.

    random and scary

Got the saw pinched once so I took the bar off and left it in the tree and got the winch cable and used another tree as a fulcrom to pull it away from the skidder then around the pinched tree and tried to pull her over. Wouldn't go and I didn't have another bar or a jack or anything so the only...

How do you maintain your saws?

All you guys rinse your air filters with compressed air, but out in the woods we just run ether or gas through it the bass ackwards way to clean emm out. And thats pretty much all the maintence we do. Clean the chips out of the bar cover if were splitting logs to big for the mill.

    Firewood frustration...

I know up here the price has dropped because of two things, mills stopped buying wood, and everyone that is unemployed or employed but working less hours and has a chainsaw and needs spare cash is cutting firewood. Its too bad for the full timers that depend on that to break even but it is what...

Did the ice storm ruin my timber?

Hammerlogging's number 4 is an important one. Anything that could cause rot or decay should go now while it still has value. I've heard numbers from out ice storm in 1998 where people cut 20-40% of there stock cause of damage. Up here though all your birches, aspen and red maple just absolutely...
