    Fiskar Hatchet

Well worth the money. I have had one for over a year now, I bought it mainly for removing small branches that I inevitably miss with my chainsaw when cutting fire wood. It works great very lite and well made. I did manage to break the handle, it was my fault for miss using the tool. I was...

What is your favorite wood to build with? And to mill?

deeker Thanks , I had heard of trailer and barn decking. I just assumed that the way it shreds in a splitter it would make planning and sanding a nightmare. So is it the same stringy dental floss quality that keeps the horses from coming back?:hmm3grin2orange:

What is your favorite wood to build with? And to mill?

deeker What do you use the Cottonwood for, and how well does it take to machining? I have only been milling a couple of years now but the farm where I get my firewood has a lot of dead and dieing Ash, so I have been stocking up on it. I mill mostly to keep a supply of wood for my other...

Wish I'd have taken a photo...

Congrats! It really is a crap shoot some times. Glad it was such a good score! I just got home from milling a Cedar I found on craigslist. Not nearly so lucky.:bang: 2ft at the butt and 9 ft long. My guess is about 50% of it was punky. Ill likely end up with 9 boards about 6...

Alaskan Mk III Height adjusters ?

flipance I have only been milling about 3 years now and in those 3 years my guess would be I have around 300 hours in the field milling. Most of my milling is 4/4 or 8/4 so I don't really need to change the mill height that often. If your milling beams or adjusting the mill a lot to pull that...

Alaskan Mk III Height adjusters ?

Starsailor Sorry I wasn't more clear. Yes I have been using them on my Alaskan. The original U bolts galled up on me and I put a new set of U bolts and started using the rockler clamps with the new U bolts.

Alaskan Mk III Height adjusters ?

Rockler cam locks I have only about 30 hours mill time with cam locks, for what its worth I have had no problems yet. They hold very firm I haven't had one slip at all, and adjustments are quick and easy. As Bobl said they are alloy and could wear quick given the amount of pressure I put...

    Air drying White Ash?

Amazing! The wealth of knowledge and the willingness to share you folks dole up daily! I haven't been milling long and have only had the chance to put a saw to Ash, Walnut, Maple and one Hedge tree. The Hedge was just for fun I thought I might get some sill plate lumber out of it. The...

    Air drying White Ash?

betterbiult Taking the smaller stuff to a band mill would be a good way to get the most lumber from any given log. If I sat down and figured the cost of gas maintenance and my time it probably doesn't make any sense at all to CSM. But a lot of the things I do for fun don't really make a lot of...

    Air drying White Ash?

23 In diameter If I only milled logs that big I would have had maybe 2 in the last 2 years. I wish I had access to that kind of size.. All my fire wood and milling comes from a friends farm, he has 2 creek beds and a shelter belt wrapping around 80 acres of corn. He lets me take care of...

    Air drying White Ash?

Thanks Guys. I have only been milling for a few years and most of what I have milled is Ash. I have around 500 bd ft 1 inch thick that has been drying at least a year, some of it more than a year. It seems to be very stable to me. little to no warping and minimal checking. It may be that...

    Air drying White Ash?

I know just hang it out the window :monkey: But seriously folks, Ive been milling up a lot of White Ash at 1 inch thick for a kitchen I need to build. I try and mill any thing 10 inch's in diameter or larger and like to keep the length 6 to 8 feet just because drying space in my shop...

    huntingcabin progress

Very Nice!! I am in the planning stages for a cabin of my own, I hope mine turns out half as well.. Is that a textured and colored cement floor? I know it a wood milling site but I would really like some details! Did you put in floor heating in as well? Do you have a link to more of...

    Stability and drying

Long term storage? I am slowly adding to a pile of beams and boards that I hope to turn into a cabin one day. I have been air drying mostly ash, I started about 6 months ago. I have the pile on cinder blocks and stickerd with few coats of latex paint on the ends. I have it in a sunny spot but...
