Want to Give Coal a Try: Advice?

I know the OP didn't request the pros/cons of an outside wood stove, but that seems like the solution for eliminating all contaminants related to burning wood (or coal) in of the house. More of an initial cost, but at $300/month for X number of months for burning gas, it may be the solution.

Surprize when I got home tonight!

I thought the act of "brandishing" is generally when on public or "not your" properties. On your own property, where it's legal to own the firearm, you don't have to hide it. If I find a vehicle in the driveway, day or night, and my "spidey-senses" start to tingle, my Sig P220 is out and ready...

    How's your "seasoning" season going?

My inventory for the upcoming burn season is fine, but I'm only 1/2 ready for next year. It's been so damn hot/humid, I've been able to find many other priorities to work/play on. Usually, 3-4 weeknights and a cool weekend day per month are used for splitting/stacking. This year, just once in...

    Hydraulic fluid change on splitter

Thanks for the heads up on the Hydra Fluid sale - I had 2 hours to spend firewooding yesterday and was able to only use the splitter for 15 minutes before a falling chunk knocked the hose off the axle/tank. :dizzy: Checked the hose clamps and both were loose. Looks like a quick trip to TSC...

    Estwing Fireside Friend Splitting Tool...A++

I bought one last Fall - use it to skinny up the wide pieces of slab-wood that we get from a Menonite log processor. $30 per full cord +. Sit on a wheeled shop stool, split once or twice, toss into the wood box in the garage. Wife is happy with the more manageable pieces, I'm happy 'cuz she's...

    Wood Cutting Christmas Gift Ideas

I bought the Estwing Fireside Friend (4 lb splitting maul on a 14" handle) for making most of the slabwood that I get into better loading/burning woodstove fuel. Most pieces only need to be split in half, many I split into kindling. Sitting on a 5 gallon bucket or rolling shop chair, I place...

    260 or 361

I have both saws so I feel a little qualified to answer - Since the 260 won't easily handle what you typically cut, I would trade in the 260 and give $200 for a new 361. Other than the 361 being slightly heavy when performing trim functions, a 20" bar on the 361 is wonderful. Usually, I only...

Three ash trees turned into firewood thanks to EAB

We have, make that had, three nice ash trees that the emerald ash borer killed. Smallest was 14", largest was 16-17" in diameter. All three laid down within a few degrees of where the notch was pointing, with a little guidance from a rope and a Gator TX. MS361 did the felling & chunking of...

A little brother for the 361?

I purchased my 026 Pro back in '96 - at the time, I didn't need a full time saw, but planned for the future. And up to Dec '08 when I purchased an MS361, it was my only saw, cut about 2 cords per year, and many miscellaneous trim jobs over the years. 16" bar, .325 chain, keep 'em sharp and you...

Northern Tool has a splitting maul with a 3 lb head and a 16" handle. FYI.

How do you think the wood heat "newbies" did this past season?

Wife & I new to wood-burning for heat. Installed a Harmon Exception last Fall, had about 14 face cord (needed 2 more) of white oak, ash, & silver maple. Smaller learning curve than I thought, other than this winter was longer than the last 5. I have 15 face cord drying now, with a little more...

    Gotta love them flippy caps!

To Slamm: When you get a flip cap that DOESN't work like it's supposed to, then you'll see where all of the oily legs/boots/backs/tailgates comments come from. My oiler flip cap is a PITA every time I put it back on - see Teacherman's pics for the reason. Maybe after I graduate from FlipCap...

What do you think of a firewood vending machine?

Saw one in action at the state park in Brighton, MI. Worked as advertised, made a lot of noise as the conveyor dispensed the bundle in the chute. My buddy couldn't resist, and had to put in the 4 dollars to get a bundle. We laughed the whole time (camping = beer). I think the slot taking the...

    It's Begun

View from an autoworker - it is as simple as NOT buying items from China. Whether it's shoes/power equipment/hunting coats/DOG FOOD/etc.. Just say NO!

    Best Gloves to buy?

I've been using a pair of Youngstown - best gloves I've used so far, many sessions of cutting & stacking with no visible wear. Some insulation, probably too warm for summer. Lots of dexterity, no-slip grip. I'm buying a few more pairs.

Cut Through my Chaps - Next Set?

"Anyhow, I cut through my chaps and my carharts, I had a pair of the Kevlar four plys " PLUS the 6 plys of hair  Imagine if you're heritage was American Indian instead of Big Foot :ices_rofl: Just kidding, but I am surprised you didn't flip over when your hair got twisted in the...

Stihl MS 361 owner AS group

Please add me - been playing with my 361 since December. I specifically bought it to get through wood faster than my 026 Pro. It does. 20" on the 361, 16" on the 026 Pro, and while in use, seem to be balanced about the same. One problem with the 361 - my back could keep up with the...

Keeping wood out of the snow

So how's it going in Minot? Lived there for four years, loved every minute of it. Talked with a friend that lives south of town, down from the Pour Farm about 5 miles, east of 83 last night. Said he's got more snow than he's ever seen. The good news is that it's been extremely cold this...

Who's wood pile is gettin skinny?

We're down to 2 face cord of seasoned - hope the poem about Ash is accurate! We have about 3 "dead for 3 years" and another 4 "dead for 2 years" standing Ash trees. I'll have 3 of them down, chunked, split, and stacked by next weekend. Hopefully they burn as good as I've heard. Any secret to...
