    finaly getting my splitter together

Excellent splitter. I'm curious what the cycle time is. It should be pretty fast. I have a home made splitter that has an 18 HP Kohler motor. That thing would cut through God if it wanted to. One thing that I have on mine that I really like is a very tall wedge. I was surprised at how...

Bet that makes your wife stay in line. :hmm3grin2orange:

    Glove mileage

I have cutting gloves, which are Kevlar lined on the back of the left hand. I cut all last year with them and most of this year before I finally wore a hole in one of the fingers. Probably around 7 5-80 cords. I got them from Amick's. These gloves just can't be beat for cutting. They...

    big fir vid

Nice tree. I would suggest you make your back cut a little higher though. I gotta admit, I really like dropping those big mamma's. After taking one of those down I usually set the saw down and pound on my chest.

    Carolina Shoe Company Logging Boots

Get the Labonville loggers boots. They're top quality, fit well and last a long. Oh, they're also the only boot I've found that are Kevlar lined. Twice the price of the Carolinas, but 4 times the boot.

    Husqvarna Chainsaws

LOL. The tree was in CA and my fat ass was in NV. Actually, that pic was taken up at Antelope Lake in CA. Huge fire went through there a few years ago.

    Gotta love this splitter design

So I've been thinking about this all day and I've come up with a design that I think will work well for high production outfits. The way I see it, the machine in the video isn't really that much faster than a splitter with a 4/6/8 way wedge. With one of those, one pass and the round is done...

    What's Happening with Husky?

I don't believe we disagree on any point at all, in fact I think we both agree completely. I just used the terms 'quality', 'pro' and 'homeowner' as a general descriptors. I didn't mean to infer that a homeowner class saw from a name brand mfg isn't a quality saw, but like all things, you get...

    Gotta love this splitter design

That thing could easily incorporate some design changes and really be a super production machine.

    What's Happening with Husky?

It's a phenomenon I call "Feeding the machine". I don't hold making money against any company. In fact, I enthusiastically support the concept, but success has it's downside. When a company first goes into business, most are driven by the philosophy of building a quality product, sold at a...

    My first load of Oak

Yeah, we hit -18 this past winter.

    My first load of Oak

Hi Al, Wood is the cheapest source of heat around here. An electric furnace will set you back $200-$300 per month. LP gas is out of this world. You have to remember, NV is the 2nd highest in unemployment and first in foreclosures. Unemployment in the Reno area is 17%. Welcome to the AS...

    My first load of Oak

It took my 3 guys, (one old Mexican who works his butt off, and the two kids from next door who together don't amount to that one old Mexican), 2¼ hours to unload. The driver told me he has one guy that splits and loads the trailer by himself in a day and a half. That would kill just about...

    My first load of Oak

Yes, but in your neck of the woods you don't have people chaining themselves to every single tree so we can't cut them down. We have to factor in bolt cutters to our cost.

    How to take this down?

I am not crusty. I took a bath just this past spring.

    My first load of Oak

12 cords, and the biggest bonus is that most of it is Live Oak, which sits at the top of the BTU scale for hardwood in this area. That load was 5' high × 8' wide × 39' long. Cut, split and dry enough to burn this winter. It was cut a few months ago, but oak tends to season pretty fast in our...

    How to take this down?

Yeah, you'll have to excuse TreeCo. He's a bitter, crusty old fart that would rather criticize and belittle people than help them with his considerable and respectable knowledge. He's the kind of guy that people are always happy to see leave the party early.

    My first load of Oak

This is my first load of oak from a new supplier I found by accident while driving back from cutting some pine. His truck was parked in front of a restaurant. As I was driving up to it I said to my helper that it looked like that's a lotd of firewood on that truck. When I got close I saw that...

    Oak or almond

Oak or almond, as a hardwood, which is better? I just scored a supplier of both and I'm not sure which will be more attractive to my firewood customers.
