More Echo CS-590 Muffler Flow bench testing - Billet outlet deflector

So here are the results: The billet deflector really makes a difference when you modify the muffler by drilling extra holes. This configuration flows 19 CFM. For reference the Walbro HDA carb (19mm bore, 15.5mm venturi) on the CS-590 flows 17.6 CFM with air filter and orange cover installed...

More Echo CS-590 Muffler Flow bench testing - Billet outlet deflector

Hi folks, it's been a while since I last posted any technical content, so here's an update. I was contacted by Matt of Gearhead Performance about testing some new custom machined outlet deflectors for Echo Chainsaws. Here's his contact info: Gearhead Automotive Performance 979-703-7338...

Running chainsaws (and other twostrokes) on E85

It's not uncommon to run kart racing engines on Methanol (M100) mixed with castor oil. That's even better than E85. The trick is with both fuels, you must run an oil that will mix properly with the alcohol. Some castors will not mix with alcohol at all, which would be very bad for the engine...

    What lathe?

Just now saw this thread. Did Brad ever get a lathe?

    Get well soon Brad Snelling

Best wishes and prayers for a speedy recovery. I'd say it sounds like you had some sort of exhaust system mods....:)

    Echo 21cc Trimmer Mods (SRM-210SB, GT-2000, etc)

Here's PHASE 1 which is the way I run the trimmer today. Phase 1: - Removed stock non-adjustable barrel carb - installed blueprinted Zama adjustable carb from Echo GT-2100 trimmer...not straightforward....had to modify the throttle cable. The butterfly screw has been replaced with a low...

    Echo 21cc Trimmer Mods (SRM-210SB, GT-2000, etc)

Looks like I need to re-post a whole lot of pictures. Here's where I left the project a couple of years ago...billet machined separate head on an Echo cylinder. Cases modified with four bolts attaching the cylinder/head assembly. The cylinder after I cut off the original Echo cylinder head...

    Echo 590 Timberwolf "H" setting

This is a good thread. I think this explains why my saw was running so rich after the muffler mod/flow bench tests. Thanks for the info. Red, can you re-post your pic of the carb mod?

    Echo CS-400 Chainsaw Muffler Mods

Welds look good. To match the flow numbers I got from the testing, you should enlarge the opening to the outer exhaust deflector to be rectangular.

Echo CS-341 Muffler Flow bench testing

Here are the results along with the air data collected at the time of the test. The CS-3400 muffler flows 30% more than the CS-341 Cat muffler. 2.5 CFM improvement doing nothing else. It is an easy bolt on muffler mod! The muffler openings and baffle cross sectional areas are well matched...

Echo CS-341 Muffler Flow bench testing

Here they are mounted on the flow bench. The obvious first test after getting a stock baseline is to remove the spark arrester screens. I am not an advocate of doing this when installed on the saw, so I show the data here for informational purposes. I leave the screens installed on mine.

Echo CS-341 Muffler Flow bench testing

I cleaned up the CS-3400 muffler with my soda blaster. The muffler is not crimped or brazed, making it very easy to disassemble the halves. Inside is a baffle with four holes on one side and a rectangular opening on the other. Spark arrester screens are identical.

Echo CS-341 Muffler Flow bench testing

Howdy, Been a little while so I thought I would post today's shop fun. My trusty little Echo CS-341 was in need of some spring maintenance so I took the opportunity to upgrade the muffler. This saw came with a catalyst muffler which always has seemed restrictive. Turns out the CS-3400 saw...

    Weedeater blower (piston pictures)

My opinions on oil: Best lubricity: degummed castor Best (cleanest) castor: Maxima 927 Best synthetic: Redline two stroke racing oil 4 to 4.5 oz/gal. Your mileage may vary, and I'm sure this will be controversial, but my opinions are formed over 10 years of competitively road racing shifter...

    Weedeater blower (piston pictures)

Bingo. Exactly like I said. FOD is the number one killer of engines. TCW3 spec oil didn't help either.

    Weedeater blower (piston pictures)

The answer to me is obvious.....debris from not cleaning the air filter. And possibly some heat induced wear. What kind of oil and ratio did you run?

    Need a string trimmer

    @Big Block Here's the thread where I modded the Husqvarna 223L http://www.arboristsite.com/community/threads/husqvarna-223l-trimmer-muffler-mod-flowbench-data.297623/#post-5880352

    Need a string trimmer

I've modded both Echos and Husky's. I prefer the ergonomics of the Echo and the design lends itself better to mods. I have a 21cc SRM-210. Get the bigger 260 model. Echo cylinders are Nikasil plated. Forged crank. They won't have adjustable carbs, so you will have to retrofit something...

    Echo carb limiters

I got rid of mine completely, but I am finding it very difficult to engage a screwdriver into the screw slot from the outside of the housing while it is running. The experts tell me it's rich :crazy2: So of course I have to adjust it. ;) I'm thinking of making some extenders which fit over...
