    Now that's a family get-together I can enjoy.

    Proud Dad

Ryder is blessed to have you. Please tell him there's a fellow on Granddad's forum that admires him and knows he's going to grow into a fine young man.

    Proud Dad

I work in some of the local schools and I have a theory about how these sorts of ridiculous and damaging practices began. A good number of unhappy teens grew up feeling like losers. Now that they are in positions of supervision, and they institute remedies based on their own emotional neediness...

    Proud Dad

That's a tough loss for a young guy. It sounds like you, and perhaps some others, are really loving and helping him grow.

    Proud Dad

I think a lot of today's young men are going to run into trouble later in life. They will find they need their manliness and it won't be available. Their wives, their children, their communities will need them to be strong and noble, and they won't know how. Even on a practical level, so many...

    Proud Dad

One thing I've noticed is that many young men don't even know how to shake hands properly. I don't remember being taught, but I do remember sensing very early on that a firm handshake and clear eye contact was a demonstration of strength, and of respect. Great job with your kids, too.

    Proud Dad

My personal experience as a Father, and looking out at the larger world, is that a healthy Dad in the house makes an enormous difference in the lives of kids.

    Proud Dad

I'm happy my son shares the values many of us on this forum seem to hold. He thinks it's "cool" to want to be strong and independent. He is proud of his mechanical abilities. I'd love him no matter what, but I admit I'm glad he's not a snowflake.

    Proud Dad

It can be tough to know how kids are going to turn out. We do our best, then it's out of our hands.

    Proud Dad

That's terrific! My guy now has his own shed where he works on his bicycles, atv, and dirt bike. He can do quite a bit but, I'm happy to say, still likes and needs Dad's help on some jobs.

    Proud Dad

I remember when my son was little, 6 or so. I'd invite him to join me on a job. Me: "Here hold this wrench for a moment. OK, pass me the wrench." Him: "What wrench?" Then at about 10, he'd help me roof, or something. I realized his "help" meant the job would take 3 times as long. It was worth...

    Proud Dad

I hope you guys don't mind of I brag just a little. My 15 year-old son took down his first tree today. That'a a Jonesred 2171 in his hands. In a world that seems increasingly intent on turning men into boys, I'm happy to say my boy is growing into a fine man. His career plan is to become a State...

    Helpful technique

I can't be the first guy to ever think of this, but I have a new technique that works really well for me and wanted to pass it along. I took down a very large beech and about 30ft of it was laying flush on the forest floor, with no room underneath to cut up. It was much too heavy to move or...

    Back Draft

Happens to me sometimes if I forget to open the door dampers first and make sure the draft is drawing smoke into the chimney. I don't know how she does it, but my wife can smell that smoke in an instant!

    Chimney Problem Future Advice

I bought my 1500sq. ft. house in 2001, and we heat solely with wood. About 12 years ago, I was cleaning the chimney and I could see a small crack in the clay liner. I talked to a sweep and repairman and he told me to call my insurance company and see if they would pay for a new liner. The...

How do I get a dead branch down?

There are plenty of ways I will stretch my skills in order to learn. Two things, though, I will not mess with: my firearms and my chainsaw. If I'm not 100% confident in my ability to successfully get some woodwork done, I hire or barter with someone who's more skilled than me. It just isn't...

    How was your day...

When I saw the title of this thread, I was going to write and share a really good day today. But, WS, your good fortune outwieghed mine and I'm glad! You contribute a lot of good information and humor on this forum. We would have missed you. Your close call makes me pause and think about what's...
