    Worst firewood you’ve ever burnt?

Worst wood I have ever tried to burn was some fresh cut frozen pine slabs. They would not burn at all. A close second was an old apple tree with a punky core. The core soaked up water like a sponge and it took a lot of “helper” wood to get it to burn. Worst firewood around here is willow. Oddly...

    Christmas Cookies 2021

Fruit in cookies is always optional. Another really good recipe. 1 stick of unsalted butter, softened 1 cup packed brown sugar 1/4 tsp salt 1/4 teaspoon baking soda 1 egg 1 tsp vanilla 1 tsp orange zest 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 cup toasted sesame seeds Preheat oven to 350°F. Meanwhile...

It may look funny, but it works. Safety is the the most important thing. It only takes a split second to cost you bigtime.

A standard helmet with muffs and vizor should be adequate. The inertia break and wrist brake should stop the saw in the event of a kickback as long as you are holding the saw properly. I see no need for a mask. Check your saw before you start. Husqvarna | Testing the Chainsaw Safety Features...

    Headlamp Mafia

I have had good luck with the Nitecore HC33 lamps. I don’t use it as a headlamp. It comes with a clip so you can just clip it to your jacket, shirt, pocket ect and still have two hands free. Handy magnet in the base for wrenching on iron in the dark. Very versatile little light. I have two and...

    Walnut??

Looks like catalpa to me. Should smell a bit like coffee when fresh cut.

    Christmas Cookies 2021

You can make crinkle cookies without a candy thermometer. They are very festive and wicked good. I usually use the recipe from Cooks Ill. It’s a bit fussy but worth it. CHOCOLATE CRINKLE COOKIES recipe | Epicurious.com You can also make them in lemon which again, look festive and they are not...

    Christmas Cookies 2021

I like millionaires shortbread. Bit fussy to make but they are great. How to Make One of Our Most Popular Cookies–Millionaire's Shortbread - YouTube I also like English toffee. I only put chocolate on one side, add a bit of rye or rum at the end of cooking, and use almonds. You could also use...

Maybe cash isn’t king? Long post sorry.

I have been selling firewood for over 33 years. We sell about 100 full cords a year. Only had 3 complaints in all that time. It was “your cord was short”. Each time, I loaded another full cord onto the truck and dropped it off to the offended customer. Polite conversation about how sorry I was...

Maybe cash isn’t king? Long post sorry.

I have sold a lot of firewood over the years. You occasionally get a ding-dong. You learn to know your customers and word travels fast with folks who sell wood. If the lady calls again next year, I bet you are all sold out. I would be.

What to do about persistent poachers?

It is a difficult situation. You need to check your local/state laws and contact your insurance company. Around here, as I understand it, anyone can hunt/trespass on your property as long as you don’t post it. If you post it (and there are a very specified set of rules to posting private...

    Homeowner bucket truck insurance question

A bucket truck is just like a wooden ladder. A big honking liability. Around here, trucks need to get inspected yearly for boom safety before you can get insurance. I would NEVER loan a bucket truck out. Not sure what boom you have but 2005 was a long time ago. If you do want to go into business...

    Cast Iron Cookware

A broken cast pan can be brazed but the cost might not be worth the price of the pan. For seasoning, the best I have used is leaf lard. You can order it on line rendered or if you have a good butcher in your area, they will probably give you some for nothing and you can render it yourself. You...

    Best firewood handling gloves

Atlas 300 gloves. Use the 300 for the warm months and the 451 thermals for the winter. Buy them by the dozen. You can wash them and just throw them out when they get too worn. You can also use a nitrile glove as a liner to make them waterproof. If you need dexterity, the atlas 380 are great for...

372xp 50 pulls on cold start

Make sure to check it when it is in no start mode. It can be somewhat intermittent either due to operator error (glove hand not pulling choke completely out) or wear. I own 6 or 7 of those saws in one form or another and 2 of them had this issue. Great saw! Only other thing you need to worry...

372xp 50 pulls on cold start

Pull off the air cleaner and make sure the choke is closing completely. That saw was notorious for wear on the choke linkage. If the choke does not close completely, you will pull your arm off to try and get it to start cold.

    Firewood is

It might have been valuable before it was cut into 16” rounds. After that, it really is not a great firewood. It burns, but there is much better stuff out there.

    Price increases

We held to last years price. Already sold out and the phone will not stop ringing. People are not happy. Going to be a long winter.

Largest viable stove for a bus conversion?

I would think you might want to look at a canal barge stove. Something that would have been used to heat a barge/boat. Not too sure what the availability of such a thing is now with all the enviro nonsense but you can look around. Might be something available on the used market. You are going to...
