    This-n-that

I've been cleaning up some trees I cut down for a friend last fall. I've got 3 pickup loads on the ground waiting to split already. This morning I went over for another load. It was all bucked, but I had to noodle most of it to get it into the truck. It's black Locust, not common around...

    Hey Zogger!

This pic's for you buddy. I was cleaning up a couple elm branches today that fell in the yard. Might as well get some firewood out of em, even if it's only a stove full or two.

    O/T - just so y'all know

I'm posting this here because it's where I hang out most of the time. I've decided to hang up my Moderator keys. If you need something, get a hold of Stihl Sawing or one of the other fine staff members here (Wampum, Pioneerguy600, Gasoline71 among others), or hit the "report post" button if...

    Wasted money!

Just a few bucks, and I'll get it back when I take this piece of junk back to Tractor Supply. A couple weeks back I bought one of these thinking it'd be great for lighting the stove. Bernz-O-Matic is a pretty good name, should be a decent product, right? Not a chance. On "High" setting...

    Coulda been trouble

Last Friday I threw some wood down into the basement. After I got done hauling the wood from the back room to my wood storage by the stove, I shut the door to the back room to get the main part of the basement warmed back up faster after having a window open in there for an hour or so. This...

The not-so-difficult to run EPA stove

There have been comments in another thread about how difficult the newer "EPA stoves" are to operate. Last night, I lit my stove from cold, and took pics from an empty firebox till reload today. If I had a time lapse option on the camera, I'd have used it, you'll just have to settle for pics...

    Crunchy ashes?

I've never noticed this before, but I'm getting some "crunchy" ashes out of my woodstove lately. It's lightweight, mostly hollow, and the edges are a bit sharp. Kind of like a pumice stone. Anyone got ideas as to the cause of this? I have some theories, that I'll share later. Here's a pic:

Haven't seen this in a while

The bottom of my firebox. I've been burning 24-7 since before Thanksgiving. The last couple days were a bit warmer, so I let it go out while I was at work yesterday. Got it cleaned out, did a quick chimney check (cleaning not needed - looks about as good as it did at first fire this...

    Another dang neighbors thread!

Came home from work tonight and smelled smoke when I got out of the car. I knew it wasn't coming from my stove. Very slight breeze from the north told me it was coming from the neighbors down the hill. This was an unmistakeable smell. They were burning... Wait for it...

Thought today was gonna be an "I suck" day

...But now I'm not too sure. A friend of mine picked me up a load of old saws, and was even nice enough to deliver em for me while I was at work last night. They didn't cost me a lot, but there doesn't seem to be any gold in the gravel either. Every loving one of em are locked up, most have...

    Moved from Logging

Figured this would fit right in here. I was out on a woods tour today, just looking to see what needs to be on the firewood menu. I came across a birch snag that was just screaming "dump me before I tip myself over", so off to the truck I went and back with the 5100. I figured it's as good...

    Shopping cameras

I'm in bad need of a new camera, my little pocket digital is OK for woodcutting pics, etc, but getting pretty beat up, and my older "big" camera, a Kodak digital with a nice big lens and a good zoom, is having startup problems. The most challenging shooting I do is stock car racing. I've...

    Made some campfire wood today.

My buddy needed a pine/spruce/fir - heck, something with needles on it, down in his yard. I was happy to help. When I got there, he'd trimmed a bunch of the lower branches already - on a ladder. His plan was to drop the top first, then the trunk :msp_scared: Think there might be a reason I...

    Sunflowers?

The guy that rents my land showed up today with the disk. He's gonna try planting sunflowers. They're not real common around here, one guy that I know of grows some for biodiesel, that's about it. We're hitting the hot part of the year here, highs in the 90s are common for the next month or...

Why it's good to answer newb questions here!

I got a PM from fellow member Butch(OH) asking if I'd seen this post on another site. It's a tractor forum that shall remain nameless to protect most of the innocent people there. Butch was nice enough to invite the offending poster here for the purpose of furthering his "education", but he...

This weekends' pick up - Bolens 5500.

A friend called yesterday, his neighbor had a big old chainsaw he was looking to get rid of. He figured (correctly) that I might be interested. After a bit of negotiation, and some BSing, I came home with a 5500 Bolens. From Acres' site, it's got a 106cc West Bend under the hood. Somebody...

Anyone had this problem - Dolmar 420

First problem I've had with this saw in 3 years. I was cutting a bit today, made a couple quick cuts, started a longer cut, and the saw died and fuel came gushing out the back of the cover. Lots of fuel. Im guessing I popped a fuel line, but curious to hear any other ideas. Will tear into it...

Flue thermometer - piece of junk!

When I bought my new stove, I picked up a SBI probe type thermometer. I was in a hurry to get the stove in and working, and just today got around to installing it. It took me all of half an hour to figure out that this thing is about as accurate as a smoothbore musket at 1200 yards. My...

    Firewood Measurement: Legal definitions

In trying to clean up the stickies section so it's easy to use and has good information that's not too cluttered, I decided that the "How to measure wood (what is a cord)" sticky has some good info in it, but tons of stuff that should be pruned out of it if it's going to be effective. I'd...

ATTENTION - ***Stickies - your thoughts please.

In case you didn't notice, Darin and the rest of the staff here have gone completely off their rocker and given me a set of Moderator keys. (Thanks guys, it's an honor...and a lot more like work than I imagined :D ) We added a "Stickies" section after getting some (justified) feedback that...
