Pecan- what to do with it?

So I have a few large/huge pecan logs. I slabbed up one into 10/4 thickness, but don’t know what to do with the rest. Thinner boards, more slabs, or firewood? Pecan is hard to dry straight, so I wonder if it’s better to dry thinner boards vs thicker slabs.

What are you making with your milled wood?

I’ve had a few little projects I’ve done so far, but nothing special. I have a number of slabs that warped too badly to do anything with. I was about to split them for firewood when I got an idea. Step stools! Here’s a bomb stool. Are here are some violin stools. Some pretty grain...

What do you think about this tree?

Silver maple, pretty sure it’s two trees grown into one. Everything looks healthy, but that random shrub growing in the crotch can’t be good. No sign of it splitting, but there’s a lot of weight trying to pull them apart. I thought that perhaps it should be cabled up high- give everything a...

    Help! I'm stuck up!

Rented a lift for two days, for I had a bunch of trees to do. 5 to come out altogether, and 4-5 to trim up. Some for myself, but most for others, so I started with the paying jobs first. Good thing I did. I took down a mid-sized dead hard maple no problem. Then went on to the large silver...

    Third time’s a charm.

I made two router sleds and I never liked either of them, buta recent acquisition of a giant maple cookie made me decide to spend the money on something good. Turns out it wasn’t that expensive after all, and works great. This is not the aforementioned cookie- this is Sycamore. The maple...

    What kind of maple?

This beautiful tree is in my neighbor’s yard. I want one but can’t figure out what it is. Help! I’m assuming it’s a maple. Maybe not??

    What’s your handiest tool?

For the younger folks who are just starting their tool collections, they should know that one of the first and most basic tools is a tablesaw with a good fence. I have a Delta 10” Contractor’s tablesaw, and it has served me very well for over 20 years. $600 at the time. But one of the handiest...

    I’m out.

37 degrees this morning, and no fire. Used up the last of my firewood yesterday. Of course, I still have gobs of seasoned wood ready to go, but it’s a block away at my shop. A quick look at the forecast says I had better replenish my racks. I got the kids for the day, so I’ll add that to the...

I suppose it’s some kind of spalting, but I’ve never seen it so thick. seems to be mostly in the rotting layers, but I sure hope not! Can’t wait to mill this one up! I think this is some kind of Maple. Silver, perhaps.

    possible monster score?!?

Just read in the paper that a local company just won a bid to remove over 10 acres of trees a couple miles away. I don't know the owner personally, but I have friends who do. I could really use some decent logs for my sawmill, so I'm hoping for an 'in' with him to score some. Keeping my...

Complete guide to heating with wood

Thought about making a video series about wood heat. The star of the show will be my mustache, and I will narrate. But I would like some editors and advisors to read through my notes, correct errors and wrong info, suggest things to add or removr, and help me to be efficient, yet thorough. Any...

    Premium firewood and smoking firewood

I don't really sell bulk firewood anymore, but I do sell bundles to a local hardware store. I sell them for $4, and he resells them for $6, I believe. I'm happy with that arrangement, and there's not an overwhelming amount for me to sell. Just right. Anyway, there's a friend of mine who has...

    Getting ready for winter

Kids and I started moving firewood to the home yesterday. Video is load #2 out of 4 loads we'll be moving. About a cord in each load, maybe a bit less. Used the new conveyor to load it up. They like using that! Makes it much easier.
