    square ground chain sharpening questions?

I ran into the same problem a few years ago. I was told that I would be looking at around a thousand dollars or more. Chisel bit files are way cheaper than that! I love the binefits of square filed chain, so I practiced with a file and I hand file my chains. They stay sharp a while as long as...

    MS660 32" or 36" bar?

When I bought my 064 it came with 2 36" bars. One was a oregon .63 and the other was a Stihl .50. It came with two chains for the .63 and none for the .50 so I just went with the .63 and put the other one aside. I later bought a 28" .63 so I could just get a spool of chain. My buddy has a 660...

What PPE do you use and why ?

Well I wear all the safety gear when I'm on fires (aint got a choice). I wear chaps, bugz, ear plug (I wear one on the saw side because I need to be able to hear everything around me, just in case), helmet, long sleeves and gloves. I can't wear steel toe because they don't allow them on fires...

    Chain: Loops or reel?

I am in the same boat. I just got three chains from my dealer, a 20", a 28", and a 36". It cost me $100. That made me lean way over to buying bulk and making my own.

    Chain filing.

I square file now so there isn't any twisting. When I round file I don't twist. I know some do and some don't. I don't think it makes much of a difference.

    Drip torch fuel.

That is what I use and what I was taught. I worked for the Forest Service on fires and that is what we used for backfires and burn piles. Just remember not to fill it all the way or it will just start shooting out when it warms up.

    Pic of your ugly mug

When I want to get away for a few days I shoot over to Eureka. I like the area. I am applying to Mad River. I will probably just move to Fortuna or somewhere like that. Hopefully in July I will be busy being out on fires playing with chainsaws and making money. P.S. When I worked for the Feds...

    New MS460 Rescue saw/Pics

Well not to long after I posted the previous message, I go called to a structure fire. The house had fire in the wall and the attic a little. Take a wild guess what the ceiling was, you guessed it, tongue and groove. I mentioned the pole saw idea to a few of the guys and they liked the idea...

    Pic of your ugly mug

It is Southwest of me. Redding is at the very top of the valley. i haven't been there but I have heard of it. With any luck I may be moving towards the Eureka area if I get the job with the Forest Service. I left them for a Municipal Department and have missed it ever since. P.S. I like the...

    Pic of your ugly mug

Here is a pic of me a few years ago when I worked for the Forest Service. I can't remember if I was running the 044 or 046 that day. I was just outside of Adin, Ca on a lighting fire cutting line. It took about an hour and a half to get to it, all uphill of coarse! I had a 45lbs pack, chainsaw...

    New MS460 Rescue saw/Pics

I like the pole saw for celings idea. Aroud my neck of the woods we have a few houses with old toung and groove celings. Pain in the "axe" to pull. If they are a vaulted celing that sucks even more. I am getting put in charge of the power equipment at our station (no complaints here). We...

    New MS460 Rescue saw/Pics

I am a full time Engineer at my department. We have a Partner K-12 saw which is nice. I don't care for the cutting blade we have for wood. It works great for concrete and metal. Our vent saw is a Stihl 044 with the bullet chain works fine. After a while the carbide cutters get torn off and it...

    What'd you do this weekend???

I took out some dead trees that were hanging over the fence on the ranch. I had to climb two of them so I didn't take out the fence. Later that day my buddie wanted me to drop a large pine. He hurt his hand the other week so he couldn't do it himself. I put my 36" bar on and it took all of it. I...

    I love that look!

Gongrats on the :jawdrop: I always like it when you get around non CAD people. I will pull out my saw with the 28" bar and they are like wow what the hell is that. I tell them that I have a bigger bar for it and they can't understand why. Later I get a call to cut some big wood for someone...

Dealer told me that my muffler mod was worthless

I took my saw (064) into the dealer to ask him a question about someting. I only go in for parts once in a while so they don't know me all that well. He saw my muffler and asked if I did it myself. I told him that I did and then he wanted me to come into the back with him, he wanted to show me...
