how can I pull a downed tree, on a hill, safely away from my cabin (diagram included)

I have a 12 ton electric winch I have often chained to a stump or tree as the anchor. If to a tree put some 2x4s between chain an tree as to not damage the bark.

Do loggers really cut "200 trees/day"?

50 years ago when young and energetic clearing my own land I thought it was a good 10 hour day to fell 5 or 6 ea 24" DF, but that included limbing, bucking, and then dragging 200 ft plus stacking with an old D2.

    "Homeowner" chippers...

Since I cannot refuse a 'deal', have 2 of the small chippers, 1" branches are easily handled, useless for larger. Best use is simply taking up space in a shed <G> Use one every 2 years or so, easier to pile it all in a big compost pile.

What is the smallest tractor or largest lawn mower…..

My house is on 3.5 acres, and have riding lawn mower, 4500 Ford loader/backhoe, JD 440 track loader, and bobcat 853 with backhoe attachment and bolt on tracks. If I had to pick just one, would keep the bobcat. Easy to switch front end from bucket to backhoe attachment, rubber tires only for...

Complete guide to heating with wood

Do not forget to add in a paragraph about not expecting to continue wood heat past 60 or 65 YO. Direct quote from wife at age 64 "you need to install a GSHP, I'm getting tired of handling 10 cords a year"

Looking for help choosing a pole pruning saw.

Welded up a platform fits on top of the backhoe bucket, gets me 20 ft high to start. 20 ft piece of square steel tube and electric chain saw on the top end, gives me a 45 foot or so reach. Have seen a few pros in the area with platforms welded over the top of pickup cabs, give them an added...

Need hydraulic oil capacity for older 25t Yard Machines splitter

retract ram fully. Fill tank to capacity. Good to go. If tank dry with ram fully extended, too small of tank if unit has been modified.

Safe rope use to guide a falling tree.

Disagree with that comment. I always have my truck or dozer about 15 degrees off the straight line of the main block section. I have BROKEN a 3/4" wire rope choker and the stored energy in the other parts of the wire rope cable shot the blocks and all 25 FEET! Being NOT inline, did not hit...

Safe rope use to guide a falling tree.

I use wire rope and blocks. And add a couple of wraps of 3/8 chain around the trunk above the cut to retain any possible barber chair. Enough blocks, no need to cut, pull entire root ball out. 2 FT DIA tree like yours should come out with about 60,000 # pull 20 ft up or so.

    Skidding Winch on Compact Tractor

That Kubota is only abut 4000 pounds? Does it have a loader you can keep full with a ton of dirt? Unless maybe your land is about dead flat, too small. --- a 15 dia 50 ft wet cedar log will take at least 1200 # to lift one end off the ground. Pull on flat wet ground maybe need 2000#...

    Removing big stump

I ended up digging it out with backhoe. 6 ft deep cut 360 deg around it. I have pulled stumps with a 12,000# winch with 16X block advantage, big trick is find somewhere - aka bigger stump or tree - to anchor the back of the truck with the winch and the other end of the 16X block array. Have...
