    Mauls Only!

I use a Monster Maul. Supposed to weigh 12lbs, never weighed it to see exactly how heavy it is. I learned early on, to let the maul do the work. Trying to swing that sucker as hard as possible will have you gasping for air after a dozen or so swings. If I can't bust it with my MM, out come the...

    What do you call yourself???

Wood tick. I'm always in the woods.

    What's a decent bush knife?

Hmm. Not sure I understand your concern, is it the hacking limbs part? If so, i'm talking limbs not much bigger than pencils, small stuff in the way when i'm humping rounds out to my truck. My edge is thinned out to 24 degrees inclusive and can still take a severe beating. 52100 is some tuff...

    What's a decent bush knife?

I wish I could. I can tell you though, it always goes with me into the woods. It's nice for hacking small limbs and skinning off loose bark.

    What's a decent bush knife?

Swamp Rat Ratmandu. 5 inch blade, carbon steel, and maybe the most comfortable handle I've used. Great no questions asked warranty.

How are you guys manually splitting your wood?

I use a monster maul, but I don't split much of my wood. If a particular piece is too tough, I use a wedge and finally my saw if I have to. My OWB doesn't require small pieces.

    I have no hot water.

I have a side arm hook up too. Can you elaborate?

    OWB & High Indoor Temps

Wow. Am I reading this right, you currently have a OWB and you are chopping wood with an axe? Man, you have some brass. Get a name brand(not from a box store) saw asap, read the manual thoroughly and commence to cutting. Oh, and don't forget PPE. As far as your original question, just see for...

    Recommendations for OWB

Did the Log Boiler owner quote a price? That unit looks solid.

    Who wants a good laugh?

We laugh at this, yet there will be a sucker somewhere, bragging to his friends in the livning room sitting by the fireplace, how he got "all this wood" for less than 28 dollars. The seller must barely be able to keep from laughing when someone stops to buy it, hell he could prolly charge even...

    Burn Time Softwood vs Hardwood?

Still do deadlift's in the gym. Makes picking up heavy rounds easier. About the pine, yes, all the pine I cut is dead standing or on the ground dead. Had a big fire in Roscommon a couple years ago and there is a #### ton of standing dead pine, oak and maple.

    Burn Time Softwood vs Hardwood?

I have to cut on state/federal land which means I have to haul it out by hand. I like cutting pine cause it is so much lighter and easier to load. I find I can cut a truck load much faster, never timed it to the exact minute though. I usually cut 6 or 7 loads to stack next to the woodshed to use...

    Burn Time Softwood vs Hardwood?

I know that I can get an over night burn with pine in temps just above single digits. It takes a wheelbarrow full to do it. I have a CB 5036. I think the biggest differnce for me, is the amount of coals left from hardwood vs softwood. I fill my woodshed with oak & maple, the pine stays under a...

OWB: Heat Loss from pump to pex?

Maybe try a larger hx? My first couple years I used a 100,00btu hx, then bought a 125,000btu hx and it drastically cut down on the amount of time the furnace blower had to run. We now have no problem heating the house in even the coldest of temps.

    X27 amazed me again!

Oh I won't be ditching my maul or wedges that's for sure. I read so many positive reviews for the Fiskar's that i'm thinking about buying one. I don't split too much wood because I have an OWB and m ost of what I cut is a foot or less dia. I do have to split some and I would like to try out that...

    X27 amazed me again!

Just curious, how do these Fiskar's compare to solid steel maul? I have one with the triangular head, I'm not sure of the weight, I think it is 12lbs.

    Anyone else burning yet?

Never stopped since last September. Had to keep the owb going as the electric water heaters has either a bad thermostat or fouled up element. Been so busy with other projects that I haven't had the desire to work in the crawlspace to fix the water heater.
