    $1500 Splitter Recommendation

Cycle Time etc. I share a 37 ton Northern splitter with my father. We like it a lot but buy what ever you are comfortable with. I agree with others that the cycle time may not be as big a deal as you think. I have to really hustle to keep the splitter busy. I think ours is supposed to have a...

    Black Widows?!

I'm not trying to start a big argument about what is better or best. You should use what you think works. Tempo is good stuff. Used it for a while and had pretty decent results. I think there is something better though. A few years ago I had BAD scorpion and spider problems inside and out. At...

    Northstar Splitters

I have the 37 ton and am very happy with it. I needed to add a guard to protect the gas tank when using it horizontally. Other than that I use it as they made it. Looks to me like you would need to add a table to the left of the wedge to catch the wood that needs to be split again. Otherwise...

    Shaver Improvement Forum

Corrosion Control I'm using the "Made for NASA" stuff that Shaver sells for water treatment. They now want over $300.00 for five gallons. I didn't pay nearly that much for mine but I will need to add to it some day. Anyone know what it is and/or a less expensive source for it? Also, has anyone...

Shaver - DHW with elec WH problems

The coil was 100% submerged. My water level is barely , about 1/4 to 1/8", over the vent line. I have a pvc elbow turned up on the vent line to reduce steaming. I think I just wanted more heat than it could transfer with my boiler water temp at about 160F. I initially planned to go to a longer...

Shaver - DHW with elec WH problems

No, when I changed things around I eliminated the coil that Shaver provided. The tubing used for the one Taylor sells is externally finned so it will be much more effective. Yes, I do now return the water to the water heater at the top.

Shaver - DHW with elec WH problems

I tried the coil that came with the Shaver four different ways. Out the bottom in the top, out the top in the bottom, out the cold water supply line back in the hot line to the house, out the hot and in the cold. All of those worked to some degree but not good enough for a family of four in the...

    And yet another heating question/problem.

You said you changed pumps. Have you checked to make sure you don't have any air in the plumbing after the work? These little curculating pumps don't self prime and can't even make enough pressure to push a very big slug of air through the system and back to the furnace.

Northern Tool Frosty Grip glove review

I and several coworkers have tried several brands and styles of the knit gloves with rubber palms. Like others have said, they wear very well. Atlas Fit has been the favorite brand so far. The model 300 is a standard glove. The thermal knit glove is a warmer glove. Other manufacturers have a...

    Chain Saw Sharpener

I have a Oregon 108181. I bought it at Northern Tool for about 175.00 if I remember right. No prior experience with anything but a file as far as sharpening. Setup and first time use was very easy. I can sharpen a chain in about 5 minutes or so and they cut evenly the first time. When I file one...

    Northern Tool 30T splitter

I have the 37 ton. I think it and the 30 ton that you are looking at are very similar in construction. I've been very happy with it overall. The idle control feature is really nice. Two additions I made for splitting horizontally are a table to catch wood that needs to be split again and I...

    Northern or Iron Oak splitters

I extended the log stripper far enough to protect the tank when in horizontal mode by welding some 1/4" X 4" flat strap to it and bracing the new guard back to the stripper. I also added a quick and dirty table that helps splitting wood and also protects the engine.

    Northern or Iron Oak splitters

I have the Northern 37 ton and am happy with it. With the 4 way wedge I have yet to find a piece of knotted, twisted, crotch wood, etc. that will stop it. I have changed two things on it. First I extended the stripper to protect the gas tank when using it horizontally. Without it the tank...

Getting a OWF in the spring

Just split it small enough that you can get it in the firebox and whatever furnace you buy should burn oversized pieces mixed in just fine. Do some shopping around as far as features and price go. Be aware that some manufacturers have jumped through whatever hoops necessary to get thier...

    No Heat For 13 Hours

Depending on how big they are an 8000 watt generator won't even run one of your air conditioners. When a motor starts the power (amp) consumption is many times more than when the motor is running. The generator breaker will trip before this starting current decreases. If you want to run your...

    Shaver Improvement Forum

I haven't done that although I know others do. Seems like a bad idea to me....especially over time. Thinking back, I did notice that the door was always stiff but I didn't get around to looking at it. The bolt failed when the furnace had been in use for about six weeks. The bolt was an...

    Shaver Improvement Forum

Same thing hapened to me about a month ago. I used some 1/4 20 grade 8's. I spent some time adjusting (tweeking with a hammer) the lower hinge so that it was aligned with the upper (unbent) hinge before installing new bolts. The door actually opens and closes easier now than it ever did before.

    Jonsered 2050 - Not oiling

I didn't think the oil volume was adjustable on this saw. I think I looked when this problem first started. I may be thinking about the wrong saw. At any rate I haven't made any adjustments. I'll have to go out to the shop and check again. If I can see the pump turning when the saw is running...

    Jonsered 2050 - Not oiling

I've had the pump apart multiple times. Can't see anything wrong there. The rubber pieces on both sides of the pump barrel are clean as is the pump itself. Pump drive gear is good and the pump turns when the saw is started. Haven't flushed the tank yet but I get oil from the tank running out of...
