    Looks like rotten ash

    Wood ID

Thanks for the replies. The wood looks and smells like hickory, but the bark doesn't.

Picked this up today, guy said it was walnut. I told him when I got there, that it was not walnut. What say you? Somewhat stringy. Southern Michigan wood.

    The most underrated firewood.

Red and White oak is the most overrated firewood. There are a lot of woods that dry faster and have just as good BTU's

    The most underrated firewood.

Mulberry for me, way underrated. It burns long and hot.
  6. woodhounder

    Firewood Identification

    Silver Maple, ok wood.
  7. woodhounder

    Punky wood

Looks like it has plenty of life. Dry it out and burn it up.

Scraping the bottom of the barrel

Definitely not the bottom of the barrel, Ash is one of my favorites. Dry time is like none other, important to me because of limited stacking room, but unfortunately almost wiped out by the EAB.

    How about Honeylocust?
  11. woodhounder

What kind of wood is this

Yes, I have never been able to make money off of it. It's either too short, too many knots, there's always something wrong with it. It's just firewood for me around here.

    Testing new firewood crating system

Loose would dry faster, but you'll get more in the crate, if you stack it.
  13. woodhounder

How much have you burned so far?

A bit over 3 cord. Lots of gopher wood, oak ,and walnut.
  14. woodhounder

How many cords per hour (or hours per cord) with standard hydro

So, you still have to stack it all when you are done? It seems like splitting is the easy part.

    Partially Rotted Logs

I agree, I leave the punky behind.

    Pine cones

Yep, I've used them on campfires, work really good.
