Does Anyone Own a SOLO chainsaw or Have Opinions on Them?

The only Solo I own is a 603. It has been an excellent saw. Mine is the 'West Coast' version (Full wrap handle, Free breathing air filter and large dog/spike). I have 24"...32"....and 43" bars for it. Run it with both 3/8" and 404 pitch chains (depending on the need). Lots of torque. You can...

    Pin Oak help

I doubt the additional sunlight will help much...except that overall it is good for the tree. Oak Galls are caused by a variety of Gall Wasps. Generally 'galls' don't have much affect on a tree unless too numerous (especially on the trunk).

    Live Oak Trimming Question

Zoysia will work fine...in fact I like it better than St. Augustine. There are different types of Zoysia (Palisades Zoysia) would work well for you (shade and heat tolerant). Pretty much all Zoysia species take a few seasons to become well established...just be aware. St. Augustine...

Magnolia Tree: To keep or not to keep

I'd get rid of it. They are pretty for about 2 weeks out of the year...then after that are constantly shedding big leaves, etc... As you have already discovered there is NOTHING that has a root system like a Magnolia Tree. They grow far, far away from the trunk and are so thick (in number) and...

    Live Oak Trimming Question

Agree completely. However the subject of this thread concerns the successful planting/growing of grass underneath a Live Oak. Not whether it is beneficial to the tree, it is not.... (as I alluded to in a previous post).

    Live Oak Trimming Question

^^^^^ Actually it WILL and quite well if done correctly. If you want to learn how then listen to some of the suggestions here. If you just want to argue or are convinced that it can not be done, then we really can't help. Below is a pic (very typical) of what is possible. (Amerishade St...

    Live Oak Trimming Question

Interesting line of work. Thanks for your perspective and contributions.

    Live Oak Trimming Question

Yes, of course Live Oaks are shallow rooted to begin with (as are most Oak Species). The root ball extends outward to compensate for this. But you are correct to advise that TOO much watering over a period of time...encourages the roots to grow toward the surface where the water is more...

    Live Oak Trimming Question

And then certain Oaks fare better than others with respect to Oak Wilt. For instance White Oaks rarely suffer from Oak Wilt and when they do...it is generally just the tops. Red Oaks on the other hand NEVER survive Oak Wilt. Live Oaks are susceptible but are a pretty hardy tree all in all.
  12. Flintknapper

    Live Oak Trimming Question

Yes, Oak Wilt exists in all of Central Texas. It isn't usually a big problem but outbreaks do occur. The most prevalent Oak Tree (by far) in the OP's area is the Live Oak. When they get Oak Wilt it is usually spread though the root system (one tree transmitting it to the next because of...

    Live Oak Trimming Question

Do as you wish. But St. Augustine WILL grow under a Live Oak. Drive around some and look at other peoples yards. The Live Oak you have is nowhere near large enough to require pruning, nor is it casting enough shade to be the problem. Amerishade St. Augustine will grow just fine (like most other...

Need help or opinion on best way to fell this tree

That is rough location to work on any tree. The object here would be NOT to 'fell' the tree in the traditional sense of it falling under it's own weight but to 'gradually' pull (control) it over. If it were me...I would go ahead and remove the other limbs (to the right). Get all the weight you...

    Live Oak Trimming Question

The Oak isn't your problem. It's the soil in your yard. You have the typical soil for the 'Austin' Area (a little bit of dirt holding all that Limestone together). IF you don't already have St. Augustine grass (very shade tolerant) that is what you will want to plant. But you need to bring in...

    Nik's Poulan Thread

That sounds right. PP-475 = 77cc PP-505 = 83cc My 4900 is also 77cc, very powerful saw for its overall size. I rarely have to get out anything larger.

    Nik's Poulan Thread

That's a really nice 475, dig the full wrap handle on it too. If it runs anything like my 4900...it should be a real cutter. Is the 505 the same saw with just a larger top end?

I don't know what this tree is

Not by a long-shot....'big' hackberry trees here will be 48" + in diameter, same thing for Water Oaks. I have a Water Oak in my yard that is nearly 18' around (about 6' across).

I don't know what this tree is

100% Hackberry. We have tons of them where I live. Basically a 'trash' tree around here. Just finished cutting one up (blow down from storm).

Advice dropping the remainder of this tree.

Yes, I will report back once it is done. But this simply is not a good tree to 'climb' unless you have squirrel-like abilities and weigh less than 90 lbs. I would need to get photos at better angles to show how badly it leans and how far those limbs extend, I'm really surprised it is still...
