What's your favorite part of tree work?

My favorite is fine tune pruning. It takes time but looks nice when completed. A good customer always appreciates this type of work and doesn't mind paying for it either.

    Pecan tree help

If there is nothing that can be harmed by them limbing and topping themselves out if they fall apart, then waiting a bit longer to see if any productive life is left in them doesn't seem like a bad idea to me.

    partially uprooted

If it's only leaning by 10-15 deg I would just notch a face cut like a vertical tree. If the lean is more than 20-25 deg I generally notch then with the typical face cut, but bore cut about 1" behind the hinge and bore straight back. They will jump quick like this so it's best to practice on...

    Pruning Paint

I've used it on jobs that called for it's use in the specs and I've used it on bark tracing lightning strikes and trunk collisions. IMO, it is more cosmetic that anything. When I first began tree can in 1980 we painted every cut over 1" dia. with paint pot and brush. Stinking stuff would be all...

    Dishonest Homeowner

Some people are born to try to cheat and exploit honest businessmen. I have gotten everything in writing since 1986 after a couple of issues like described here. Written contracts help a lot, but if the person is a moron and there's certainly is no shortage of them out there, then they still try...

    Urban logging. Anyone do it?

A buddy of mine who also runs his own small tree service mills a lot of wood. He bought a portable band saw mill like 20 years ago and sells a bunch of rough cut lumber. I get him to remove all my big take down logs that I am being paid to remove. He removes for free to me and makes some $$ on...

    New England Grows

Did anyone attend? I was up last Wed & Thursday. Lots of goodies to look at. There were plenty of vendors but just folks looking and walking around looked to be on the slim side to me.

Arborist 101: advice to folks that want to climb

Arborist 101: advice to folks that want to climb

I started with a large "old school" tree service. I began climbing on manila rope and a very basic saddle. We didn't have lanyards. I was started out on the public utility crew and did mainly line clearance to get used to heights, rope work. Most of my crew was fairly new to tree work and we...

    New Business!!!

I started my tree biz back in 1983 and the economy was bad at that time, but nothing like this past year. I started with a 3/4 ton pickup, then went to a one ton dump, then after establishing myself a couple years, then I went after newer larger equipment. Start with the minimum and let it grow...

    TruckCraft

sweet looking set up. I am considering buying an insert and like the advantages of the aluminum, but don't know if $$ will factor in to it. I looked at Truckcraft's site and see the steel insert has been redesigned with the cylinder in front like yours along with some other changes.

Good read KK, I enjoyed your spin of humor on this. I think we've all been there and done that before with friends of friends or 4th cousin once removed....
