Stihl 660 - how difficult to replace impulse line?

The saw won't drop down to idle w/o stalling. Impulse line may need replacing versus a tear down to replace seals. I've got a new impulse line, came w/ kit for fuel line. Months ago I ran across a youtube vid that made replacing the impulse line on the 660 look tricky and complicated, can't...

Is there a current Silky pole saw that converts directly to a hand saw?

I'm working in tree canopies near buildings. Sometimes I when I'm up in the tree I need a pole saw, sometimes a hand saw. Is there a Silky pole saw that has an easily removeable head essentially does both?

Longest bar for Stihl 088 CSM WITHOUT helper handle?

What's the longest bar I can plan on putting on my 088 to CSM with an Alaskan without using a helper handle? I mill alone, don't have a helper for the helper handle. I'll be buying bar and Alaskan rails/bar set.

Any experience with HF Synthetic Rope ?

Does anyone use the Harbor Freight/Badland ATV synthetic rope? It specs like an Amsteel blue/dyneema knock off for $0.50/ft.

How much time do I have before milling a pine? An oak?

I'm in northeast Mississippi. I've got two trees to come down because they are in the way. The first that needs to come down is a pine about 20" DBH w/bark. The second is a white oak about 30" DBH w/ bark. How soon would I need to mill them before they would start to deteriorate and not be...

    12 inch pole saw questions

I'm planning on getting a powered pole saw (I've got a decent manual one). But have some specific questions I have not found the answers to on the company websites. Front runners are the Echo (266, 280) Stihl Kombi, Stihl Ht133. With a 12" saw what's the thickest branch you can figure on...

Where's a good place to buy the basics? Especially carabiners

I've got a bunch of trees to prune high up. When I was 10 years younger climbing 30 feet up was easier. Now I'm looking at getting minimal climbing gear. I've got some pretty good rope but one thing that I'm aggravated with is the price of locking carabiners. Every place seems so be charging...

Finally fired up my 088 for a purpose :)

Since I bought my 088 in September 2012 I haven't found a "real" reason to use it. I fire it up about once every month or so and whittle down a piece of log, but to me that's not a "real" reason. Well yesterday a storm rolled thru northern Virginia and a small limb fell. And my 021 and 660...

What do you do with your "scraps"?

Those first flitches, mostly bark. Those "whoops" where the wood splits down the center and you cut off a few feet. All the leftovers bigger than chips? All those branches to small to mill? Just wondering how the rest of you process this potentially valuable waste.

    HF Bandsaw mill for $1446.93

Well they have the HF sawmill going for $1800 w/ 25% off coupon code which seems to work (sometimes the coupons don't seem to work). That's about the price of a Stihl 660 w/ an Alaskan Mark III. Read the threads here, there are a couple of people getting good use out of theirs. Link to the...

New addition to my wood processing endeavors

Well I got tired moving logs by hand and didn't want to keep borrowing my CIL's 30hp tractor so I got authorization from SWMBO to buy another tractor. I figured something that would lift a ton on the 3 point, 4WD with a FEL and about 40HP (engine) would do for my needs. With a budget of < $15K...

    Stihl 088 in Damascus, MD

I'm going to post this in chainsaws probably BUT since I got mine, plus an Alaskan Mark III and some great cases :) :) I thought I'd also put it here first. If you need a big milling saw, this will probably do. I don't know the seller. STIHL 088 MAGNUM CHAINSAW

Milwaukee router for planeing those "wide" boards

Hope this does not offend the forum gods. There's been many discussions and threads about "planeing" wide wood with a router. Generally they recommend a heavy duty router. I'm trying to buy a 20", 220V, 1 phase planer in my price range (< $750). It has not happened yet. However I ran...

Harbor Freight Sawmill - 20% off $1,600 + shipping, tax

/edit - that title should have read 20% off Now down to $1,600. In this thread http://www.arboristsite.com/milling-saw-mills/121027.htm , which I started in January 2010, I discussed the low end HF mill. Well they changed mfg, some say it's Chinese, some say Canadian (Portable Sawmills for...

What's the biggest bar for an 088 to run .375 x .063 chain?

Since I've only got a measly 36" bar for my 088 I need a bigger bar. My first choice is a Woodland Pro 41", because that will let me use the same chain as I use on my 660's with the Oregon 42" bar (135 links of .375 x .063). But it got me to wondering what's the biggest bar you other CSM'ers...

Anyplace online to buy Stihl 088 parts?

Muffler especially. Bailey's doesn't carry much for an 088, and I really want a spare muffler.

    "Found" an 088 on CL

I know I've often downplayed the need for more cubes. I was constantly advising "you don't need an 880, a 660 will do.". Well it will UNTIL you see one so cheap it has to join your equipment pile. 088, circa 2000 Unmodified Moderate usage. just tuned (he couldn't get it running...

    Woodmizer LT10's and price increases

I was just over on the Woodmizer site. For the first time ever I saw 2 (TWO) used LT10's (last years model) for sale. The asking price is just about what they sold for new, ~ $3K. The new LT10 list price w/ a 10HP motor is at $4.1K!! I got mine, w/ 10HP for $3.2K (last years model, on last...
