    postmortem for my string trimmer

Thanks for the replies folks. I have all that. The compression ring is all there. It is stuck where the piston was gouged. You are absolutely right about the loss of compression due to reduced piston travel. I think that is probably the main cause of loss of compression and the gouge in...

    postmortem for my string trimmer

Technically off topic... But it does have a chain saw attachment. :greenchainsaw: I don't know of another site with the conmbined knowledge of the membership here. (Where's the emoticon fur suck up when I need it. ) My string trimmer died earlier this week. I was operating it and it just shut...

    I saw it on Ebay/Craigslist

http://chicago.craigslist.org/nwc/for/1587861377.html If you're a Stihl lover and want the world to know... (Or perhaps a Stihl dealer) Here's a 6'x12' lighted sign for $1000 :jawdrop: (I have no basis for determining the value of that. I just know that $1000 is a piece of change. ;) )

    I got busted!!!!!!

Get the saw and tuck it away somewhere she won't find it. After two months it is OK to bring it out and use it. If she asks, just say "Oh, I've had this one for a long time..." Replace "saw" with "skirt" and "use" with "wear" and you'll see where this one comes from. Turn about is fair play...

Stihl MS-260 - Sponge in fuel tank?

Thanks guys for the replies. No, it's definitely not that sponge. It nearly fills the fuel tank. I started to pull it out and it just tended to disintegrate so I figured I better ask before proceeding. This may be something the PO or another tech tried in an attempt to solve a fuel system...

Stihl MS-260 - Sponge in fuel tank?

There's what looks like a folded sponge in the tank of my new-to-me MS-260. I can't find it in any of the parts diagrams. Does it belong there? How can I check the fuel pickup which looks to be behind it? The saw runs for a few seconds if I dump some mix on the carb throat, but seems like it...

Well... I bought an MS-260 today

Hi JT, Had family staying over the weekend so I didn't get a chance to work on it (other than to find manuals.) And no need to be jealous. If I do get it working it is the result of: Noob luck. Possibly it was more or less discarded because the seller had budget for a new saw or their dealer...

Well... I bought an MS-260 today

Time will tell whether it is a stupid decision or worth way more than $35 or somewhere in between. I haven't had time do mess with it so I cannot answer more questions yet. But I did snap some pix. Thanks for the tip on starting fluid. I didn't think it would be good since it has...

Well... I bought an MS-260 today

I hope it wasn't a mistake. My son and I went to look at an old Wheel Horse tractor and the guy had a Stihl he wanted to sell as well. He asked $40 for it but all we had between the two of us was $35 so I offered him that. He kept the scrench and went for it. It's a non-runner. It'll start...

    Nik's Poulan Thread

Poulan is owned by Husqvarna, right? Husqvarna is now owned by BMW, right? Therefore, my Poulan 4620AX is really a BMW in disguise. :D I should get some BMW emblems to put on my saw. Oops! they cost more than I paid for my saw! :jawdrop: FWIW, my other BMW is a '98 K1200RS and...

Single Mom looking at Redmark GS2500

I think that would be this one, but I recall someone posted a link at a lower price. http://www.cporyobi.com/products/zrry10532.html In addition to finding someone who can support you, I suggest you invest in sharpening tools and take some time to learn how to use them. A sharp chain will cut...

What is wrong with me? Why can't I buy a Poulan?

I'd like to hear more about the aunt and cousin. Pictures? -walt

    I May Get Banned......But........

Likewise. I try to research their posts because you can tell a lot about someone by reading what they wrote. If there is no post history, that is a red flag right there. If there is an issue about taking a personal check, when I'm a buyer I tell the seller they can let the check clear before...

    Nikasil vs. chrome

Nikasil has also been used for years in BMW motorcycle air cooled engines. (I'm not sure if it was used in the water cooled ones too.) There is some information at this site: http://bmwmotorcycletech.info/cylinders.htm

What is a full comp chain?

I do like that kind of thing. There's a certain satisfaction from touching the file to chain, feeling the results in the next cut and knowing that the equipment is performing at its best.:rockn:

What is a full comp chain?

And the chain I use has training wheels. It is like the full skip except in between the cutters it has a ridge that gives it anti-kickback properties. I doubt that I'll ever have enough experience to abandon the training wheels, but I keep it sharp and It cuts well enough. -walt

    I'm sure a repeat thread

If a Makita is a possibility, check out their outlet at http://www.cpomakita.com/chain_saws/. Right now they have a 50cc saw with 18" bar for $370. They also carry refurbs but don't have any in that range at the moment. HTH, walt

please explain four stroking to me in laymans terms

Hi Rusty, Both layman and noob here... I bought a Poulan 4620AVX that was a Sears return and was using it after the seller had gone through the carb to get it running (close to) right. I still wasn't sure if it was right or not but felt it should have more power. I also noticed that when the...

    Nik's Poulan Thread

I'm curious about this whole one handed thing. (Keep in mind I'm a rank back yard amateur, so that's where this line of questioning comes from.) I've read that I should always keep two hands on a saw and if I ever needed to hold it with one hand, it should be by the forward handle to avoid the...
