    hickory wood for lumber ?

hickory is beautiful. can be used for anything from flooring to cabinetry. very hard and once dry it's fairly tough on tools, but worth it. use the top for smoking and firewood but mill or have milled the trunk. you won't regret it.

Milling a hunk of chinese elm

i'm always curious when someone posts a casual response to a 4 year old thread. are they just randomly reading old posts? not that it's necessarily a bad thing, i just find it odd. ;)

i don't have any experience w/that particular mill but it sounds like you're in the perfect situation for a bandsaw mill. i doubt that you'd regret getting one. ;)

    American Elm

good stuff nato. i've also had decent luck drying elm although it seems to take a while. don't know if that's due to the interlocking grain?

    Choosing a mill size?

as usual well said qbilder. they do compliment each other. in my area there are enough 30" plus logs that it's really nice to have a large chainsaw mill setup for breaking them down. yes i could freehand quarter them but i've not had much luck getting straight cuts. i find that it's much...

How to Slab extra large logs?

your situation is the exact reason that i want to upgrade my csm setup. i'd like to be able to mill 60". im up in madison wi and there's enough large logs around that i'd really like to be able to slab em and also just break them down cleanly for resawing. my plan is to purchase a stihl 088...
