    Stihl 661C, Husky 395xp, or Jonsered 2188

I've not milled with a 661 or the 2188. I have milled quite a bit with a 395. It pulls a 42" bar just fine through white or yellow pine. I've not milled any hardwood though. IMO you can't go wrong with a 395.

How many are running square ground?

I'm curious, what model Silvey is it? What would the shipping to the lower 48 be? Just curious. It might open my Craigslist searches.

70cc or 90cc for Occaisional for Alaskan Style Mill

My brother and I prefer to run a 3120 and a 42" bar on the CSM, but the 395/394's do get the job done. I have used a 372 on the beam machine but my 385 does better, and I go to it more often than not for the sides of the log.

How many are running square ground?

My brother and I run square ground chain exclusively. We mainly cut yellow pine and white pine for firewood. 10-15 cord per year. My brother has also been exclusively running square ground chain on his Helitack crews fire saws. That crew won't go back to round filing. There is another cache...

    Rotary small diameter log processor.

That's just it. I don't know where the machine originated. This video came my way and I thought the knowledge base here may have seen this before or could determine what this machine is or how this machine was made. Is it possible this machine is an adapted hammer mill. See link for a...

    Rotary small diameter log processor.

Trying again from home. The link should take you to the video's OP face book page. Should be public..... <div id="fb-root"></div> <script>(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src =...

    Rotary small diameter log processor.

I was sent a video of a small diameter log processor via Facebook. I'm tempted to call BS on it but thought I'd ask around here. I searched and didn't find it sorry if it's a repeat. From what my father in law and I can tell it looks to be a 5HP or larger electric motor, 4" or so drive...

Looking for information on fire proofing around a home.

To the OP, All the advise you have been givin is good. This here is right on the money. You should do some plot measurements and determine how many tons of material per acre your land has(Browns Transect Method is commonly used), and what your current Basal Area of your stand is as well...

    Big Dog Splitez Pump Question

I was reviewing my notes from the conversation with James. I think he has the pumps set up to work one after the other not series or parallel. He spoke of having pressure reliefs on them to activate based on how much pressure they would sense from the cylinder exertion. When one pump would...

    Big Dog Splitez Pump Question

Hello all, I am in the research and planning phase of a new splitter project. My old faithful is running strong, but I want something more. I'm thinking low speed 20 HP Diesel, 5" or 6" cylinder, 24" stroke, horizontal arrangement, no log lift, and possibly a 4 way moveable wedge, etc.. I...

Haul-back winch options for tractor logging winch owners.

You can find the 8274 used for under 1000$ sometimes. Used hydraulic winches will most likely be the better option in the end.

Haul-back winch options for tractor logging winch owners.

I have a 8274 on a trailer. It is a quick line speed but not that fast, and as stated previously the constant duty will kill the electric motor.

Haul-back winch options for tractor logging winch owners.

For reference, the blue winch cost me 100$ I found it through Craigslist. The black one came from CL as well but was part of a deal in a transmission I needed for a project. The whole lot was like 400$ I'm located in central CA. Region tends to drive prices on stuff. Heck a rear end off a...

Haul-back winch options for tractor logging winch owners.

Build a small portable winch that runs off the tractors auxiliary hydraulics. Set/mount the unit nearby the tractor with the control near the operators seat. I imagine one of the hydraulic Braden/Tulsa 8K units from a power company rig or Tow Truck would suffice for your haul-back needs...

Wood cutting summer 2012. Picture heavy

If you look at the sapwood you will see a blue staining. Its called blue stain, and it is a fungus that over time will decay the wood. The tree pictured has been dead less than 3 years and generally the wood maintains decent integrity and hardness. With it rounded and split the moisture...

Wood cutting summer 2012. Picture heavy

Its not 2012 any more, but I figured I wouldn't start a new thread to continue the wood sagas. 2013 saw little opportunity for getting wood out of the woods easy, so I didn't cut. This year the getting is good so April 1 when the Forest Service opened the woods I was ready. My brother and I...

    42" bar on Husky 390?

We have a 390 at work. It sucks. We run a 28" to 32" bar and chisel ground full comp chain. Mainly for cutting yellow/white pine. At 2000' to 3000' elev it's ok. At 7000' it blows, no power, crummy idle, the list goes on.... If it had a non EPA carb the story may be different. I'd say...

Anybody got experience haulin wood with Ford 351w w/ auto trans

If it was me I would stay away from the E40D. If it got hot (anything over 225*) its dead. It may work, but for how long is the real question. I have the E40D in my 96" Powerstroke EX LWB 4X4 with 4:10 gears that I did a Dana 60 swap on. My tranny is with a HD torque converter, billet...
