Stihl ms 440 not running well when cold

Well, here's another update. If only the problem with the 440 had been solved with the spark plug. Nope!!! My gut said it was more than that. So, I checked for an air leak. Sure enough, it was the clutch side crank seal. After the new seal, I was retuning the carb, and during one WOT...

    ms660 question on exhaust port

Btw, the elasto- start handles from huztl are completely useless. Sometimes won't even last their first startup.

    ms660 question on exhaust port

I set the squish tight to compensate for the stepped squish area of the cylinder combustion chamber. My cheap compression gauge said 145, and it's usually off by a factor of 1- 1.4 or so. So, looks to be pushing 200 psi.

    ms660 question on exhaust port

I see. Thanks for the reply. Once I leaned the carb out a bit, it started to cut nicely. Probably have some more leaning out to go, but want to play it a bit conservatively. Put 1.5 tanks thru it today. It idles nicely and runs well, so far...

    ms660 question on exhaust port

Well, I decided to go ahead and install and port it anyway, even though I'm sure you're correct that it will be a waste of time. But I figured I could use the practice on a mild port job, so I went ahead and did it. No epoxy, though. I've got my eye on the cross performance 660 piston and...

    ms660 question on exhaust port

I see. I think I'm too chicken to try that.

    ms660 question on exhaust port

I apologize that I don't know how epoxy will safely and effectively fix this issue.

    ms660 question on exhaust port

Do all the a/m 660 big bore pistons have this free port issue, and will .050 (approx) be a big deal. I want to do a mild port job on it, but am afraid it will be a waste of time.

    ms660 question on exhaust port

This is a new farmertec big bore p&c on a huztl ms660. Question is, what happens with that free porting on exhaust port (pic) when piston is at tdc? Will it be detrimental? Opening is at most .050. The standard 54mm piston that came with the saw has a longer skirt and doesn't free port like...

    I'd sure appreciate a parts list/diagram for a Stihl ms361. Thanks!

Stihl ms 440 not running well when cold

Sorry it's been so long and no update, like I said I would. Christmas, and people being sick has kept me down. Oh well, the other day, I finally was gonna "tear into it", only to find the spark plug had worked it's way loose (theaded but not tight). After "fixing" that issue the saw runs like...

Stihl ms 440 not running well when cold

If I remember, the low speed jet is the only one I messed with, and I can't remember which way I turned it. Whatever adjustments I made were very small, and in some cases even ineffective. But this current issue seems to have nothing to do with tuning. I didn't get to doing that carb...

Stihl ms 440 not running well when cold

Lol! I'm enjoying your replies! The saw has a "running problem", so to speak. I tried a quarter turn out on both the low and high speed jets. Nothin, notta, zippo! But that's what I expected. If you all could hear it run I'm sure you would all have guessed the same. But it's hard for...

Adjusting the carb didn't make any difference. I should have some parts in a few days.

    Ms260 STIHL

I run the 260 a lot. My preferred setup is the 18" and .325 full chisel. I'm 6 feet tall, so anything less than 18" makes me have to lean over too far and give me a back ache. I haven't run a 20", so I can't comment on that. I don't think you can go wrong with 18" and .325.

Stihl ms 440 not running well when cold

Ok, thanks for you comment. I will find out soon enough when I try to fire it back up after sitting out in the cold. I will richen up the high speed jet.

Sounds good. All those things are on order. Spark plug too.
