Need advice for planting Red Oak

Mike, I never though of a stump grinder for planting. They should form a perfectly shaped bowl for planting. Isn't that kind of tough on the old machine though?

Need advice for planting Red Oak

Remove the turf from a six to eight foot diameter area. Roto-till to the max depth of the machine, 10-12 inches would be ideal. Dig out the center portion to the depth of the root collar to the bottom of the root ball. Mulch and water. You will have the fastest growing tree in the neighborhod.

    semi-dwark apple trees

I'm not a real expert on apples but, what has the weather been like this spring? And have you tried to reduce the fruiting once the fruit has started? You should pick off clusters of fruit and reduce them to one apple spaced between 7-10 leaves.

    huge old trees near house

Tom and John, hit the points that 1. you get what you pay for. 2. check references. 3. check for certification. Certification is a measure of a current level of knowledge. Which your experence shows can be limited. Tom's right you paid for a bid not for an evlauation/recommendation of...

White pine near retaining wall - problem?

Change the thought from invasive to exploitive (is that a word?). If tree roots find moisture and air they will grow in that area. That's why tree roots don't grow under properly installed pavement.

    Southern Magnolia leaves are yellowing

With your soil sample you should have the pH checked (Mags) need acid soils. Are the leaves that yellowed interior or exterior to the tree? Interior is normal leaf loss.

White pine near retaining wall - problem?

Gus, I understand your concern. The fundemental problem is how was the wall/foundation constructed? Block walls tend to settle and develop cracks which tree roots MAY exploit. If the wing wall is not tied into the foundation well as the pine grows the added weight may flex the...

home reconstruction and damage to a sugar maple's root system

My first question. Peter, you say that the tree has withstood the construction of the house and road. Have you had the tree looked over professionally? A consulting arborist should look at the tree and evaluate it to see if this next onslaught will be the last straw for the tree. If the...

    White Birch Borers

Joanne, When looking for replacement trees look at natives such as shadblow (serviceberry). Here's a UCONN site for you to look through for choices http://www.hort.uconn.edu/plants/ GO HUSKIES.

    Pagoda dogwood twig doeback

JPS, Any other dogwoods in the area with a similar exposure? Check their south side to see if you have a match to your problem.

That would depend on the renter before you and how many rocks the grind.

    shade

And the professionally installed is another topic. Their are some "professioinals" I wouldn't let dig a hole let along install a $300 tree.

How much water for newly planted seedling?

Remember to mulch to conserve the water you add. At the height of a drought you can add 10 gallons a week to a 1-2 inch caliper tree. Best to take a 5 gallon bucket and drill a small <1/8 inch hole on the side at the base and stand it next to your tree. This will slow water your tree and...

    shade

JPS, Let's not make it some one elses proplem if it is the wrong tree. Don't you hate having to take down trees that are squeezed into a site?

    shade

Since your site is sandy and full sun, I would suggest a drought tolerant tree. Kentucky Coffee Tree adapts well.
