New member of my Stihl family

So, after many hours of research and thought, I finally pulled the trigger on a new MS261cm! Immediately took it to the woods to break it in. I am very impressed! Light, fast, a joy to run. Highly recommend.

Why I hate heating with wood

can't agree more Jrider. The colder it gets outside, the warmer it gets in my house! Just turn up the thermostat and let the OWB do it's job. I too used to like it cool in the house, but now, I can not stand to be cold in the house. I don't mind it outside, but do not like it indoors.

What do you do with old chains?

Update: I have taken a lot of the advice from this post and chains are lasting much longer now. I am not taking near as much off the rakers and I am letting the saw do more of the work, instead of pushing the saw through the cuts. Thanks again for the advice. This site is full of good of useful...

Opinions on Brave 20 Ton Dual Split

I have had the 20 tonBrave splitter for about 10 years. Never had a problem with it and I think it is pretty impressive what it will split, i.e. knots, twists, etc.

    Freaking Heat Wave

Sloppy, muddy mess around here. Ice storm right after Thanksgiving and about 4" of rain yesterday. Flooding all around me. Crazy to think Christmas is around the corner.

    Natures comfort owb rusted through

sounds like it worked out the best it could, since you were able to re-coop some of your money by selling the NC. Good luck with the Hardy

What do you do with old chains?

I believe that may be a lot of my problem! Didn't really think of that, until you mentioned it. I get pretty aggressive with lowering the depth gauges on the chain. I will pay more attention to that on this new chain and see if that makes a difference. Thanks for all the advice guys/gals...

What do you do with old chains?

Using Stihl chains on my 18" Stihl bar. I tighten the chain enough that you can still pull about 3/8" of slack on the bottom side, so I don't think I am over tightening the chain. Maybe not getting enough oil?

What do you do with old chains?

They are stretched to the point the adjuster won't take the slack out.

What do you do with old chains?

Since I have become a member here, I have learned to hand sharpen my chains, which is good, except now, I will stretch the chain before I ever use up the chain, plenty of tooth left. Surely I am not the only one with this issue and was wondering what you all did with your stretched chains, I.e...

    Bark Off Cottonwood

doesn't split real nice when it is wet, but it will also rot in the center if the rounds are very big.

    Bark Off Cottonwood

I have plenty of dead cottonwood with no bark around my place. As long as it is not touching the ground, it is usually pretty solid dry wood. Cuts nice and splits fairly easy. I would burn it.

    Natures comfort owb rusted through

Not to pee in your Cheerios, but I had a Shaver stove do the exact same thing after about 6 years of use. I burn mostly year round, so it only got cleaned once a year or so. Had the water tested religously. Contacted Shaver and they gave me the run around. From what I could tell on my stove, the...

    OWB Annual Consumption?

I burn about 8 cords a year in my Nature's Comfort, heating a 1800 sq foot house, decent insulation and windows. Also have floor heat in the basement (which is GREAT!!), which I would not have if I did not own an OWB. House stays around 74 all winter, both basement and main floor, have caught it...

    Anybody burn hackberry

If it's losing it's limbs, be careful of the trunk being rotten. Seen many around here where the core is completely rotten. They usually come down in a wind storm.

Used Shaver good deal or not

Keep looking. I followed all the manufacturers for cleaning, water testing, ect and mine lasted 5 seasons. The firebox corroded through to the water jacket. The Shaver company is an absolute joke to work with and eventually would not return calls or e-mails. Needless to say, I bought another...
