    Federal Airtight 264CCL Questions

Rick, Send me a PM with your address. I've got two of the coal burning plates for the cat chamber. I don't plan on burning coal with my stoves, so you're welcome to have one. Here are some pics of the new stove in the living room. I took a picture of the glow around the thermometer and...

What is the very best wood stove. Price no consideration

I recently saw a Woodstock Fireview stove for sale on craigslist for $750. Beautiful stove (soapstone), so I looked it up. Apparently it is rated as one of the best overall stoves. Wish I had an extra $750 laying around.

    Federal Airtight 264CCL Questions

I just took a look of those pictures of the baffle plate under the cat....I can definitley say that diamond plate was not what came with the stove. Definitely get the perforated and if it doesn't come with new bolts, get some. It looks like they used whatever they had laying around the shop to...

    Federal Airtight 264CCL Questions

Use the perforated plate. My old stove had a solid plate. I was constantly having to clean ash build up off of the cat. My new stove has a perforated plate and the cat is as clean as it was before the first fire. I truly believe it is because the plate is perforated. My theory is: The...

    Federal Airtight 264CCL Questions

I used the gasket size specified in the manual. I believe it is 3/4". I did not try and adjust the latch though. I was going to give that a try today when I get home. Anybody have any experience adjusting the latches? BTW - geo, how's everything going with the 288?

    Federal Airtight 264CCL Questions

Help me out guys Alright. I've got the new stove put in and have been burning off and on for the past few days. I'll get some pictures posted soon. I'm having an issue that I can't really put my finger on. When I engage the cat after the cat thermo reaches about 600, I get the steady...

    ID this wood

I was having trouble with #1. Bark is a little too peeling and the heartwood is too uniform. Oaks typically have a darker heartwood compared to the sapwood. #2 is definitely a gum. Sweet or black. I've not had the pleasure to split SG, but BG is impossible to split with a fiskars, so...

    Federal Airtight 264CCL Questions

Most of the guys on this forum and the other wood burning forum will burn pine. Shoot in some areas that is all that is available, and they burn for 6 months or more out of the year. As long as it is seasoned properly and the stack temps are kept up, there really shouldn't be anything to worry...

    Federal Airtight 264CCL Questions

Doc. Sucks about the Makita. I want even begin to start giving advice about fixing it, but....have you pulled the muffler to check things out on the piston? I know you say it has compression, but alot that I've read about this test says that it alone can be misleading. Did you actually hook...

    Federal Airtight 264CCL Questions

Hey Doc. If you were closer I'd take some of that wood off of your hands. I've got about 3 cords of mainly red oak ready to burn this year (seasoned for two), but I think it is still a little on the high mc side. Oak hates to give up its moisture. I think in a perfect setup you can get oak...

    Federal Airtight 264CCL Questions

What's going on Federal Airtighters!? Who's burning? In VA we are not there yet, but I can feel the change a comin. Some new news on my end. I picked up another FA264CCLR. This one is a "R" (right loader), so that will take some getting used too. My excitement is mainly because this one...

    Makita 6401 with low compression

Thanks for the comments guys. I can perform a test of sorts to figure out how this guage is reading. My neighbor just bought a new MS 311. I can hook it up to it and see what kind of compression it reads. Do you guys know what the compression should be on the 311?

    Makita 6401 with low compression

You were all right...of course. Sure enough I did have the wrong kind of tester. It did not have the schrader valve on it. Took it back and got one that did ($10 bucks cheaper too). Hooked it up and got a compression of 125 psi. Took 9 pulls for the needle to stop moving, so I'm pretty...

    Makita 6401 with low compression

Do I need to have the throttle engaged? I just saw a youtube video of a guy testing compression (with a tester similar to mine) and he showed that the throttle was wrapped to keep it depressed. Thanks guys. Also, just saw on craigslist a guy selling a Smartach TA100 tachometer for $65...

    Makita 6401 with low compression

Maybe I did get the wrong kind. The description of the tester says for testing cars, motorcycles, recreational vehicles, and boats. The tester has a pressure release valve on it up by the dial. Is that the schrader valve or similar?

    Makita 6401 with low compression

Thanks. Not sure about the schrader valve. This is the tester I got. I'll also check of the E&E tachs. Hopefully, when I retest (after following the instuctions) I'll get a proper reading.

    Makita 6401 with low compression

OK. I admit I didn't read the directions. I just hooked up the tester and started cranking. According to the instuctions on Baileys' for their tester: Testing Procedures: 1. Run the engine for about 15 minutes until it reaches normal operating temperature. 2. Stop engine. Disconnect all...

    Makita 6401 with low compression

I have an HD Makita 6401 that I got about 2 years ago. I've never had any problems with it, but honestly know next to nothing about what to expect from chainsaws. My experience was limited to a 40ish cc Poulan before the Makita. I went and got a Harbour Freight compression gauge today and...
