don't know if its been mentioned but a bale of straw with a bit of diesel soaked into it makes a good starter for a fire like your looking for. a stack of pallets with brush piled on top/around works good,too.

id say this is maple that's been laying around for a while. from what I understand, spalting/rot in maple starts not long after coming off of the stump.

idk if ya have experience with paint, but i suggest checking out southern polyurethanes for painting supplies. great products at dam good prices. and if ya need assistance, their forum is full of experience or just call. youll talk to the people that make the product and use it,too...

nice setup! i helped a good friend with a similar build 10-15 years ago. we mounted an oscillating wall mount fan up high behind the stove pipe. on low it moved the heat out into the work area real good.
