    Hardy Question

Open the back cover and look at the lines with the heat water circulating pump running. It could be a seep or a pinhole.

    Hardy H2 water loss

Canact, We had similar issues with an H2 that is at the old homeplace where my daughter lives. We found a couple of things. First the float switch failed and allowed the water level to drop before we caught it. We had our local rep replace that. He replaced the seal on the flapper like you...

Seeking advice - cutting through hard-to-roll logs on the ground

A suggestion, get a plastic wedge and when you have cut down about halfway, drive the wedge in and it will keep the log from pinching on you. You can also clean out under the log and then keep your chain out of the dirt. w. jones

    small 4wd firewood tractors

Check out the Bransons. I had a JD 750 4wd with loader and it was a very capable machine in the woods, but just a bit small. I purchased a Century 2535 ( Branson 3510) 15 years ago and have never looked back. My rear wheel tread is 5 ft wide and it does have a loader on it.With a small logging...

True cost of heating with wood (joke)

When speaking of values of wood heat it is the intangibles that cannot be assigned a dollar value. We have been heating with wood for 38+ years. Wood stove was major requirement from wife,"when the power goes out I want something that will the house warm!" Added benefit, one cold rainy Christmas...

    Husqavarna 12" timber tongs

Ditto on having 2-12" tongs. Easier on the back and hands, and way more efficient in picking rounds off the ground. And if you watch what you are doing you can pick up several of the smaller rounds at one time, though often it is faster just to pick the little ones up by hand. But on bigger...

    Best Yard Cart?

I have the 2 ton trailer model and use it a lot behind my compact tractor. Wood, gravel, brush.........what ever. Once you use a hydraulic dump you become very spoiled. It is sufficiently narrow (4 ft) to trailer easily in the woods. It is too large however for an ATV. If you haul a lot of...

    Jotul 500 Oslo dreaming!

I have had a model 500 for at least 10 years , maybe longer. Wonderful stove and it keeps our 1900 sq ft home very toasty. In < 20 degree weather it will take the wood, but nothing can beat sitting by the fire on a cold rainy day and watching the flames. Best sleeping pill I have ever seen! I...

Replace my Vigilant? How much better is a new stove?

I have had an Oslo for about 10 years. Love it. It easily keeps our 2000 square ft home comfortable in central Va. I burn about 2 to 2.5 cords of dry mixed hardwoods a year. And I know that we do not live in a challenging heating area but the stove is a simple, very functional design that...

    Winter wedges?

If you make your own wedges out of hardwood, which way do you have the grain oriented for the most durability. Is hickory better than oak? W Jones

    Hardy H2

If you do not mind me asking, how old is that H2 unit? I have a neighbor who is thinking about selling his 9 yearly H2 due to health reasons. (not only filing the unit but cutting the wood) thanks W Jones

    Inexpensive Pickaroon

Why don't you guys look for an OLD axe head and take a cut off wheel and split it in two. You will then have sufficient metal to put a good curve and tip on it. I made two last year and they stick beautifully and you can lift some very heavy chunks. W Jones

Hard to get wood, is it worth it?

Big logs and Murphy seem to be best of buddies. And experience cannot overcome one bad decision. I was splitting a 12 ' 32" red ok log lengthwise so it could be loaded on a sawmill. I ripped the log down the middle with my chainsaw and then finished splitting it with a maul and wedges. When...

    Skidding Winch on Subcompact Tractor

Doug you won't regret having the winch. It improves your work efficiency and safety a lot. But as others have said, GO SLOW and learn the limitations of your setup. There are many threads talking about proper use of a winch. Read them as they are helpful. The most important piece of advice is...

Do trees and creatures really predict the weather?

Water witchers are an interesting breed. I use to work for a water department years ago and got a call one day from an engineer asking me if I knew anyone one who could locate water underground. It seems that a well driller put a well in for a new home and the well went dry. One of my employees...

    Skidding winch for the tractor

Shea Shea, a question for you. Have you ever tried wrapping the choker and cable around a hung up tree so that it would cause the tree to twist out of the tree it is hung in? I have the same winch as you and have had some success getting tree un-hung by using the winch to twist the stuck...

    Old wood burner tested today

How do you move a stove like that without cracking or breaking a casting? That is a beautiful piece of iron work there. Is it very brittle? W Jones

I bet you are grinning every time you hook a choker to one of those logs!:D W. Jones

    Skidding winch for the tractor

Shea, I do not know if you have fooled with folding the blade and using the main drawbar on your tractor to pull wagons or trailers, but folded with the 3 point hitch raised all the way there is a lot of room to hook up a wagon or trailer tongue. This is how I use mine to pull a small wagon...
