Biodegradable bar oil...... anybody use it?

Glad I wasn't the only one today!! Actually, the other climber was nice enough to fill up my saw and I had to start the 20F morning felling a larch with oily boots, pants, and flipline  I use what I can get. Bio-oil is very common here. :)

    New competitor in town

In Austin, Bartlett was definitely as described. No so much that they were awarded multi-million$$ residential properties. In 4 yrs I never bid against them. I bid against Davey Tree frequently. Davey had a full page in the YP. Bartlett a biz card. They seemed to get the high end...

    flip-line hitch

I have seen the same thing. I think it is just due to the compactness. With the pulley, you have a biner linked to the d-ring so the system is longer and out of the way. I love the trade-off of the shorter system. For security, I don't rely on an end knot, I have the tail tied to the...

    flip-line hitch

I use a 3/2 vt on on my D ring for my flip line. It ain't broke so I ain't switchin' to a different hitch. Smooth - like Tom said, to take up slack, pull up instead of out. ;)

    What drew you to treework?

After finishing my forestry degree at Texas A&M, I asked my forest pathology prof if he knew of any jobs working with the oak wilt fungus. I wanted this mainly because all other forestry jobs where in the SE piney woods. Too many banjos for me. I wanted the Texas hill country. He pointed...

Started writing book on landscaping and tree care tonight / Advisors?

Good luck!! Get this book http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1884956173/104-0724151-9888732?v=glance I read a lot of it while visiting a friend in Oct. It details how to find a publisher, where exactly the $$ come from and even how to self discipline yourself. I asüire to...

If the rope is too short...

The safest option would be a lift because the tree is a total unknown. There could be hidden defects. Other than the tree, I knew the strength of EVERY component of my system. The same boogie men that make biners suddenly fail could also make ropes suddenly fail. Correct? I look at it as...

If the rope is too short...

My issue with the running B in this senario was retrieval. I could have used a throwline for that......or I could have just used my 3rd line for a work line while leaving the 2 connected as a rescue/escape line.

    another lesson in customer relations

Hey bush guy! service industry If it is not a service then what are you selling   You lost money because of your actions, not her's. You failed to properly qualify a client and if they were qualified, find out what their needs were. There are crazy clients...

If the rope is too short...

Glad that stimulated conversation. The 1st time I used this techn I used fisherman's knots but found them hard to untie after being loaded. Especially with the forearm burn from an 80ft footlock. I view this as a safe way in a pinch If done daily, I would buy another line. Twice a...

    another lesson in customer relations

People do get upset when you act like a flake. You are in a service industry. Part of a service is doing what you said you would do. Maybe you should just tell them you are a flake and you will do the job when you get around to it.

If the rope is too short...

Do you ever just tie them together? I have 2 120ft ropes and a shorter one. Sometimes the 120 is too short. For access via footlock I just put a biner tween the splices so I have a 240ft rope  When I get in the tree, seperate the lines and use a traditional system. I have only done...

    new year/season plans

I am about to close out this year as well come Christmas time. In the Jan and Feb there is no work to be found here in frozen Deep Bavarian Superland. My plans are to stick out what I am currently doing come march. Keep the contract climber business plan and enjoy the freedom of a low...

arborist cuts arm, bleeds to death (Van BC Nov 23 2004)

Here in Krautland, legally required to have 2 climbers trained in aerial rescue at all times. That is fine and all, but most of the time, I find it impractical. Price wise especially. Hard to charge time for 2 climbers when one is needed and be competitive.
