Several Q's: double bars, max bar width using MS660, and skip chains

I think I posted about milling some redwood back in Oct or Nov of 2018, but I run a pair of 066's on a double ended bar (66" long, 48" cut capacity) with great success, granted I'm on the west coast cutting soft woods (doug fir, big leaf maple, etc). I've only run full comp thus far. As for...

    Project Redwood

Back in Bellingham now. That was a very successful trip! Don't always get to say that :). One of the last pieces I milled up had some fantastic character that I am really excited about. I ended up winching in the "cap" pieces to mill up further at some point. While a come-a-long works, its a...

    Project Redwood

Another good couple of days. My original plan for quarter sawing didn't even get fully setup as it was painfully obvious that it wasn't going to work. What has worked, and worked very well, is screwing 2x lumber on ends (if the crown is up, picture below is after final plain sawn cut), laying...

    Project Redwood

Well I'm here in Big Sur milling my redwood. Today is 1/6. Tree is about 46-50" in diameter. Hard to tell from pictures, but the lower section is completely burned out. The good section will yield two 9' sections. The 10' wide "road" is a pretty steep grade requiring backing up in 4 low which...

    Project Redwood

Hi all. I am in Washington state and have access to a few Redwood trees in Big Sur that came down in the fires a couple years ago. Trip isnt official yet, but I am trying to get my plan in order to go down and mill these up. The trees are down, on private property, and I will be transporting the...

What are you building with your milled wood? merged

Posted about my boat a few months ago. After working on and off its finally complete. The boat is birch with ponderosa pine oars. The oars are pretty down and dirty, wasnt sure how I wanted them so I plan to make a new set. I did three coats of epoxy and three coats of spar varnish for UV. All...

What are you building with your milled wood? merged

Quick update on the boat. Floor trimmed flush though still need to sand the entire thing and do a couple fairing jobs. After that will pull off stand, flip, and trim off excess panel along top edge. Lots of squeeze out on inside but that goes pretty quick.

What are you building with your milled wood? merged

The boat plans came from Spira International (great guy to work with). The plans actually show the sides being made from a single sheet (scarfed plywood). Theres a couple ways to do lap strake as I have have it, but I opted to have the internal frame members "stair cased" so the side panels were...

Couple of recent items. Mantle I was commissioned for. Soft maple I cleared off my shop site. The boat is in process (13' grand banks dory), but is birch I milled a few years back. Will be glassing the outside and interior floor. Should be "done" within a couple months. I hope :).

    Initial wait period

Thanks for the reply. It wasn't the fire the directly killed them. The fire cooked all the vegetation and then a heavy storm cycle came through resulting in flash flooding. The trees are located in fairly steep terrain and think the soil just gave out. I am purely in an advisory roll. I almost...

    Initial wait period

I have a contact that has a series of redwoods (some 4-5' in diameter) that were healthy but lost in the recent fires in Big Sur, CA. They are on the ground and they have reached out to some local outfit to have them milled. Apparently, they were told they had to sit for a few years. I don't...

    Milling Big Leaf Maple

Definitely mill that puppy! I run a 42" bar (~32" capacity) on fir, maple, NW typicals with good success. I think going longer would be slow going but you could do it. That crotch piece could be exceptional depending on the color. Little hard to tell from pictures, but maybe mill in from the...

    Pairing up a 461 and a 661

I to in a previous life was a biker. It functions like a brake line system where fine adjustment can be made at the screws coming in (lines are standard brake cables). One thing that annoying on the above is sometimes the cable round will jump out of the screw going through the lever. Easy...

    Pairing up a 461 and a 661

the heart of the issue is having the power heads operating at the same optimized RPM range. The only time one saw would be driving the other, practically speaking, is when BOTH are engaged and one is running just enough to engage the clutch and the other is running at a high RPM. If one power...

    Milling a leaner

I haven't put eyes on it myself, but this tree will be coming down soon and has been offered for me to mill. As you can see, it has a good lean to it. I am concerned the internal stresses will just cause the planks to warp and won't be worth the time and effort. Was wondering if anyone has...

Spalted big leaf maple, walnut bow ties. Finished with wipe on poly (first time using it, was impressed with the results). Bow ties in legs are full depth and top ties are 1" deep (top is about 2" thick).

    Twin powerheads double ended bars

I run a 5' bar with twin 066's. Used it on a 4' maple. Loved it. There was some other recent thread bludgeoning this topic to death and I think BobL nailed it: you want the torque/HP bands to overlap. Its not about individual RPMs or power so much as in order to realize the full potential of...

    Building an 84" Chainsaw Mill

I have run my double end bar (60"with two 066's) with great success on about 48" maple. I dont know where this idea came from that the saws need to be synced. When you are in the cut, they are each seeing a load. One saw is not impacted by the fact theres another motor pulling. Your prime RPM...

    Milling an Old Oak Video

awesome video. I really liked your winch. I made a crappy one that works, but after seeing yours thats clearly the way to go. I may suggest running 2 x 4s under the main supports as I have in my profile pic. because they give you more bed length, i find entering and exiting the cut is much...

Milling experience: is this normal ?

I have a previous post showing me using a primitive winch. Unequivocally a fan of the winch. Pushing a mill through, to me, should be a last resort. If you can elevate one end and use gravity (advantage being not needing a winch). I like the winch because I dont need to elevate (for me I can use...
