    Crosscut Saw Length?

a good cross cut saw for firewood I'm considering to get a 32-36" crosscut saw for cutting firewood rounds. I use about 1/2 to 1 cord of firewood a year. Is this too short, or would it be sufficient for my purposes?

    harbor freight 6# maul

Thanks for all of the helpful responses. I was on the verge of taking the maul back, but am really happy with this maul, and after splitting a tree decided to keep it. Awesome. Where did you get the handle, and what process did you use for attachment?

    harbor freight 6# maul

I got a 6# maul from harbor freight for $20 a few days ago. It's a nice maul for splitting, but after a couple of hours, the handle came a little loose at the base. It is quite firm at the top, and looks like maybe the adhesive did not go all the way through the head. My first thought...

Mayten tree - will this make good firewood

The city is going to take down a 32 year old Maten tree (maytenus boaria), pending approval in a few days, and are willing to leave the wood. Is this tree likely to make good firewood?

    I need more heat

Well since he has a serious heat load, there's no problem, just open the windows. Anyway, I'd rather have a wood stove than a wood furnace any day, any climate, anywhere. Doesn't matter. People are getting along quite well in Canada with wood stoves and not wasting resources. I grew up...

Neighbor Took Half Cord - No Pay - VENT!

That's a great idea.  I've heard white paint works well too. With my luck though the neighbors would like the smell, as they have 15 cats inside the house already, "oh fluffy smells so good tonight", or else they'd not let the cats inside and would send them back over.

    I need more heat

I would maximize the heat from your current wood stove and it's location first, with loading it up and using the top down burn. Does the basement get hot? If so, maybe strategically placed vents to the main living areas would be a big help. My fireplace insert is smaller than your wood...

    I need more heat

Are you filling the stove, and using a top down burn? If not, then do this. The fire burns much hotter and more completely.

    I need more heat

I would either get a 2nd wood stove, or build a masonry fireplace, the latter being my desired option, more work but would last much longer. I would expect either of these to be much less than 4 to 5 thousand. Your current chimney is probably on an outside wall, which serves as a heat sink and...

best splitting maul with hickory handle

Thanks for all the recommendations. Apparently the fiberglass handles have a thick polyurethane coating. Maybe I can find a similar coating for the hoe. Here is the availability of 6# mauls that I've found with fiberglass handles. Harborfreight $20 - out of stock. Tru Value $35 - out of...

how many cords from a tree

How do you estimate how many cords can come from a tree, or how many rounds of what size would make up a cord?
