How were the original log prepared? Were they sawn? Were they adzed? If adzed, saw them oversized and just adze the showing faces. We had to do the same thing on the cabin at Heritage Park of North Iowa ( www.heritageparkofnorthiowa.com ). If you want, bring your poles up to our sawmill...

I would say it is Burr Oak, a member of the White Oak clan. The dark spot (blueish black) means that there is iron close by. It might be up or down the trunk from that spot. Use a metal detector to find the rest of the metal in the log.

What about the bar cover? Why is the name STIHL and the sight line on the bar cover "white". Shouldn't they be black?

Metal in the butt log FYI, in picture walnut1, I see a blue dot at the bottom. This tells me that there is iron in the tree. Either below or above this spot. Best be scanning that log with a metal detector and/or be prepared to resharpen/replace some mill blades.
