How To Be An Excellent Groundman

I have issued this to several wana be, cracky, joe big man, multiple year, "Ground Man"!!! I always wondered where it came from? Thanks for the help as you guys have made it easy to chop the attitudes right off! I run a fairly tight ship, and theses guide lines help a bunch. I take no garbage...

    Referrals or finders fee

Never had an "arrangement" with another tree company. An old friend told me that would be slitting my on throat, rarely does it work both ways. Even right now I talk with a guy who has a bucket and I give him lots of work that I can not do. I found out he is not giving me work back or even leads...

    considering a move

If your business is only a year then do not worry. If it were five or more then we have material. Just do not come to Seattle. We have some where in the neighborhood of 500 or more "Tree Service" "companies" I say this sarcastically and pissed of. Everybody and their brother and cousin is a...

    Travelling Climbers pay question.

Not to high jack the thread but where are these contract climbers? I get calls from the "climber" who is out of work, the other company can't give him enough work. I am far from egotistical but I have a hard time trusting someone. $2 - 3 hundred a day is big bucks to have an unknown come in and...

How important is your business name? To change or not to change ! Opinions welcome

If your going to add tree service, OK, don't do like some I've seen. Advertise something and then subcontract it to another company. Problem begins with no control of product, it goes on from there. I've seen so many forms of doing business and it seems so many grow too quick, do not manage...

Finally new brand of stump grinder teeth and wheel claiming superiorority and simple!

I know nothing about stump grinding, don't do it, can't afford the machine, or the maintenance. I am wondering if anyone uses the Bandit grinder with their new wheel. There are a multitude of wheels and machines out there. If I was going to get one I would have to have major work, lots of proof...

Top Down Vs Bottom Up Removals

I'd love to see this done on the 130' Douglas Fir I did about 3 weeks back. I'm not squashing the idea but I can't see anything but a mess. The only way, or the way I know to work best, is bottom up. I usually work a group of limbs together with web slings attached to carabiner. This gives all...

First time using wesspur for equipment, anybody use them?

I love Wesspur. I get a nice drive to an area I love and get to lay hands on the gear I need. I personaly know some of the employees and had some work climbing for me. They know their stuff and the splicing is done by people I know. All around good company.

My Business Setup Opinions: SERIOUS INQUIRES PLZ

First off, if your good buddies with your company owners or not doesn't matter. Goodwill aside they will not slit their throat to help you advance your company. DO NOT get into their company for anything more than your paycheck. It would be as if you were in a partnership, the only ship that...

    Tree CLIMBER wages?

Wish I had enough work to hire a climber better than me. IF I found such an individual I'd pay well to retain him. I am no superstar only a 17 year climber who runs my own show. I figure I make about 20-30/hr. after all is washed and dried. Still there are trees I will not climb because I am...

Are all tree service companies a nightmare to work for?

Not to mention it is a pure form of disrespect. It says "your my boss, I know, but this conversation is way more important than anything you have to say". I have never been allowed to disrespect any of my employers, or the dynamics they set forth, the mood if you will. When it comes to having...

Are all tree service companies a nightmare to work for?

If I caught an employee on the phone it had better be an emergency. I have a no phone policy unless we are having a break and it has to be very important business. The no phone policy creates an internal social interaction instead of one guy off to the side seperating themselves from the rest of...

looking for advice on starting a company.

Well, insurance is a bit sticky. It seems to be all or nothing, a minimum is about $1 million policy for liability, about 2K per year. As I said last post maybe do some climbing as a contract work for another tree company. I am sure there is someone who would give you a few cuts here and there.

    Targeted Vertical Speedline

I can think of a half million times when that could be helpful! I wish I could do that stuff reliably every time. Seems like the conditions never line up to "ideal", to be safe I do it old school small pieces.

Are all tree service companies a nightmare to work for?

It does sound as if the OP has some concerns about safety. I have been around tree work since the age of about 12-13. I never was allowed to be slow. I just had a groundie step out because we did not communicate well and he made poor decisions. I believe you need to be looking for a better...

looking for advice on starting a company.

Hi I am 43 and been running my own show for 7-8 years now. I could give you advice to do your climbing as a hired gun if you will. Stay in that saw shop and work towards a business of repairing equipment for the tree companies or buying into the saw shop. I have found the tree company to be very...

    Stihl 064 and. An 088

I have used a 64, good uper midsize saw. I own and use an 084, same size as 880 but older, running a 40" bar. Great for big wood and stumps. Sharp chain is everything on the big saws.

    motorized log cart

First off I am not a salesman for the little helper. I had closely entertained the option for wood removal from backyard jobs. In my area most people have stupid gates that are "3 foot" at a true opening of about 32"~34" not enough for a mini skid steer. I would say the manufacturer is making a...

Bug eyez, use 'em? Like? Hate?

Hey got here late! YES I use Bug eyez. I have for 17 years. Order them right for the company in a 10-12 pair at a time. All of my guys use them too.

    People must be hungry

Having a hard time getting people to understand they do NOT need 5-6 estimates to get the job done at a resonable price. I go in as number 4-5 sometimes and the customer admits to this. I ask sometimes if they have ever had someone waste their time and how did it make them feel. I figure most of...
