ok how many of you have had a close call

I've had more close calls and minor injuries using a dozer for clearing than I've had with a saw, axe or pruner. Our dozer does not have a forestry cab - it has an open ROPS, and no cab sweeps. I've almost been skewered by trees more times than I can count, even being as careful and...

    Newbie Chain Question

If that's the case, I'm in agreement with Mike's recommendation above (i.e. buy a 16" .050 bar, and use your pair of chains). I use my chains in pairs, that gives you two to start a job with that are sharp. If you need a to change out chains mid-job, you'll have a spare on hand that's ready...

    Newbie Chain Question

.050 chains will fit in, but move laterally (side-to-side) in an .063 bar guide slot. Don't do it... If you want to run .050 chain, get an .050 bar. Chains can be lengthened, but they are cheap enough not to do it unless you have your own bulk chain, breaker, and spinner along with...

How much can a 16" bar really cut?

This ends up being a function of: - bar length - chain type - displacement/horsepower of the saw - your skill level - site conditions, including lean of the tree, wood condition, tree type, degree of precision required for felling You have a 36cc saw with a 16" bar, and probably...

    Yard sale Stihl 011AVT

Nice looking saw! I have one of 'em, runs like a bat outta hell, and makes a pretty decent climbing/limbing saw. The reed valve scream is cool too... New fuel and vent lines are pretty easy to install, mine needed pretty much the same treatment after being rescued. Your cases are in good...

    Tool for trimming stumps

If the trees are still standing, the shear or forestry mulcher are the most efficient way of accomplishing this kind of task. The shear will take the entire tree down, and if you're deft with the controls it will leave a very short stump, maybe an inch to two inches in height, depending on...

    First saw advice

Depends on the dealer and the saw - some Stihl dealers charge more than MSRP for a newer model/in-demand saw. The same seems to hold true for low-stock non-current model year saws for the in-demand stuff, like 36X, 4XX and 6XX saws, can't say for larger displacement saws as they're not stocked...

did some cutting, big wood, vids loading

That's some big quarters ya'll got cut up there. Down south, where I'm cutting we don't ever get much chance to work that kind of wood unless it dies on its own, or falls over on something after a storm. Those quarters are as big as whole trees I usually work!

    MS362 Review

RMC is Stihl's low-profile semi-chisel chain, RSC is standard full-chisel... There is a big difference in cutting with the two chain types, if you're in clean wood the RSC is more rapid cutting than the RMC. The RMC seems to keep an edge longer in dirty wood, but it definitely cuts less...

    Yesterday's Job Photos

Some photos from yesterday's job, fairly typical of the work I do in the park I work for... There are four large live oak trees in this area, the two single-trunk and one double-trunk tree visible in the first photo, and a larger live oak out of frame. These trees died from oak wilt, and...

Stihl chain confusion, what are these ??

Allied Building has an on-line parts search - I entered in the Stihl part numbers and got the corresponding marketing part number and description for the collection of part numbers in the OP's post.

Chainsaw Attack..... A friend goes to the ER.

Glad to hear he's OK. I cut daily in South-Central Texas, where even before it's official "summer" we're having temperature-humidity index days 100+F. I wear chaps, over heavy denim, gloves, long-sleeved shirt and Stihl head-gear with glasses, a screen, hearing protection and steel-toe...

    very dissapointed with new 362

How many tanks of fuel/how much run time do you have on the saw? I have a relatively new MS 361, which took about seven full tanks of run time/break-in for the saw to develop good power, and another three-four tanks before it was screaming.... Maybe it is break-in related...?

Freaking nails, spikes, screws and metal...

Enviro-terrorists/wackos... they spike trees to deliberately damage and/or attempt to injure loggers who fell the tree, or in the case of mechanical harvesting to damage the harvester.

Freaking nails, spikes, screws and metal...

The Lumberwizard III looks promising - if it has sensitivity to a depth of 3" - 4", it would've probably detected the stainless screw I hit, and at $99 is is a bit less pricey than their $1300+ logging-specific model, as well as more portable. I'm glad I don't have to deal with environmental...

Freaking nails, spikes, screws and metal...

I'm using the sectioning cut method with an MS361 and 28" Carlton bar/Oregon full-skip chain. Before the felling operation, I limb the tree using an 011AVT from either a lift (on the truly dead trees) or from the tree itself via climbing, and section all the large branches off the lead, and the...

Freaking nails, spikes, screws and metal...

This happens all the time here, despite printed and verbal warnings given to the campers. This past weekend, a dimwit thought it was funny to drive a tent spike, through the head of a catfish carcass, into the trunk of one of the river-front cypress trees. I caught it before they left the...

Freaking nails, spikes, screws and metal...

Today I was sectioning a large diseased (oak wilt) live oak in preparation for final felling tomorrow... This is one of several 70" to 80" diameter (above the root flare) trees that are coming down here in the park I work in. I was running my MS 361 using a Carlton 28" premium bar and Oregon...
