    Craigslist laughs

Some folks like a particular make and may like the bigger water tank. Still - my own pride would prevent me from doing anything other than tossing 'em. ...and definitely wouldn't put them on my front lawn.

    How many SuperSplit owners?

I just replaced the bearing under the ram with new parts from SuperSplitter. It didn't need to be entirely replaced, but I did anyway. NOTE: the new bearing is 7/8 in diameter, while the old one (my J model is 10+ years old) is 3/4". The new bearing noticeably reduced the return friction...

Buying used stuff on Ebay. Tips to not get burned.

eBay is a garage sale. Amazon is a store. Treat them appropriately. I love 'em both. I buy a lot of stuff from eBay - only because I buy weird stuff.

    MEASURED, CALCULATED, I,VE BEEN LAZY!

Holy smokes. Elm is about the best I can consistently get.

    MEASURED, CALCULATED, I,VE BEEN LAZY!

I'm really low - I took a couple of seasons off due to a garage build (oh yeah, and a heart attack), so now it's time to restock. I don't think I have enough to last this winter, so will be relying on the gas furnace. Doh.

    eBay

I've used eSnipe since 2003 - I have no complaints at all. They charge %1 for a successful snipe. Rule #1: NEVER get emotionally involved with a purchase. Figure out what the item is worth to you (including shipping, of course), enter your eSnipe bid, and walk away. You can cancel your...

    new garage heating ideas

All good points, although I'd eliminate the rebar in the slab completely and replace it with a fairly coarse fiber add-mixture (lots of it). I wouldn't mess with the fine stuff, (which helps with initial shrinkage, some types of spalling, and only small cracks), but go heavier, which will help...

    UTAH Wood Burning Ban

I'm a Utahn, and I'm not happy about this proposed legislation at all. The root problem is: cars create half of the visual pollution, but the politicians are "smart" enough to know that they can point fingers at the "bad" wood-burners (who are a small minority, and therefore easy to pick on)...

    Here's a purpose-built tool, but a bit expensive: PLAS3

    Chainsaw "in neck" Tree Trimmer

Ok, the big question is: what kind of chain is this? It doesn't look like low-kickback chain, but I'm not very good at spotting these things anyway. Maybe we could give him some pointers on sharpening too.

    What size hookaroon?

I have the Peavey Tenzaloy 5' - it's light enough that I can hold it straight out horizontally with one hand. I mostly use it for pulling rounds out of the back of the pickup, where the extra length and lightness really comes in handy. If I were using it to pull rounds up a hill, I might opt...

    fire starters

I'm a dryer lint and egg carton guy. Looks ugly, but it's cheap. I collect scraps of candles/wax/etc. and when I have enough, will make a few carton's worth. It usually just takes one egg holder to start the fire.

    harbor freight chain grainder

I threw mine away too. When measuring with a caliper, I found the accuracy was very poor. It probably did a better job than eyeballing; it didn't do better job than the handheld rigs (Grandberg, etc.) I ended up with a Chicom Oregon copy - which isn't perfect, but better than anything else...

    Crunchy ashes?

I burn a lot of elm lately, and also get the crusty clinkers a lot. It's not an EPA stove, the draft is usually mostly open, and I don't use a grate, so the coals stay next to the ashes, with a fair breeze of fresh air passing by. I'm leaning towards to the fused ash theory. I think someone...

    Purple wood

That really looks like cedar - I have some pieces in the back yard that when freshly split have the same color and texture. Pinkish/purple when freshly split, then fading to gray after weathering. Like fj40 said: the smell should be very distinctive if it is cedar, but to find out, I'd give it...
