    Black Locust

Give your Oak customers free Locust "samples" when you make a delivery. That's how the grocery store markets new flavors of sausage, cheese, etc. I wouldn't think you'd need to mount the Locust on toothpicks, though...

    Stove Location Discussion

I think better. If you have a man cave in your basement as I do, a LOT better!

    Stove Location Discussion

Our stove is in the un-insulated half of the basement. The house is a 1000 s.f. Cape Cod. Our oil heat is no longer hooked up (using it's chimney for the stove). There is no duct work, as the oil system was hot water baseboards. I can make the main living area 75* any time I want. The master...

Top secret spy photo from Steve's place!

I've read on here that "homeowner splitters use vert. shaft engines, commercial units use horizontal". I don't remember whether the author of that statement explained it or not. I've also been debating whether I want to upgrade my splitter for more speed, or just sell it & build what I want...

    &@$*@$ Bees

Pour a cup of Diesel fuel on the ground next to the hole. They'll be gone w/ in 24 hrs. The reason they get mean this time of year: They eat (fermented) fallen fruit. Drunk bees are :msp_mad:ANGRY BEES!:msp_mad:

    Black Locust

BL is about all we burn during the dead of winter, just stir the coals in the morning & throw in the next couple sticks. Never cared about flames, since the stove is in the basement... It's all about heat for us, & you can't beat BL for that...

Got to meet Hedgerow, and some of his Hedge!

My offer stands on the Hickory, I have Pine knots as well. I also have big boxes... It'll be fun when the girl behind the counter gives me the "Anything hazardous, fragile, liquid, flammable, potentially dangerous... speech. "Ma'am, I'm mailing some firewood to a guy in Missouri"...

    Anybody burn Holly?

As promised... This is one of the ugliest rounds of the Holly. I didn't bother cutting off the "tentacles", just threw it on the beam & let 'er rip. The other side... Surprised me how cleanly it split. I was expecting a tangled birds nest of grain. The rounds have some weight to...

Got to meet Hedgerow, and some of his Hedge!

I've yet to be successful getting them to germinate. Harvested fruit from different trees, trying to overcome the male/ female thing. Most of what I've read said to freeze/ thaw a few times, that didn't help... Anybody have any insight?

    Black Locust

I vote "B". The same idiots who think Oak is king, & think they're saving on their heating bill by burning wood in an open fireplace. If you burn Locust around here, you're almost in a secret society... I'm all for keeping it that way.

    I hate knotty wood!

Not easy to shame that boy, gotta give him credit for that. We beat him up pretty good for his "thin" stacks, yet he keeps coming back...

    Black Locust

There may be regional differences in density, but around here BL is way better firewood than Oak. Most of the BTU charts I've seen seem to agree...

    Black Locust

I have heard of a contractor in S.E.? or S. central?, PA whose entire business is building Black Locust decks. Don't have any more details, maybe one of the members from York or Lancaster co. knows more? If there's one, there are probably more...

Post pictures of your woodpile/splitting area

I'd buy each of my tree service wood hook-ups a Mingo if I thought it would do any good... After watching them work, I'd like to buy half of them a handful 7/32 files & show them how to use them!

The green sap wood is what sux. REAL stringy. Dead ones don't bother me.

Post pictures of your woodpile/splitting area

Started working on the pile of green Cherry rounds today. Even w/ the Fiskars, they SUCK! I'll be doing the rest of the splitting w/ the machine. And this is why I hate tree service firewood... These are the "shorts". The CL post offering the wood said "cut to 18" length". "Cut...
