Fence We broke one section of a rotten stockade fence about a month ago. I replaced it with a used section within 2 hrs($35). It was my problem and I fixed it. The condition of the remaining fence is not my problem. I will go to great lengths to avoid any and all insurance claims. 1k for one...

People are just stupid some times.

free work never has it been more true. "you get what you pay for". I can't let it bother me, its like the guys that advertise around here, we will cut your tees for free, if we can keep the firewood. then they charge up the wazoo for brush chipping or pine tree removal. actually i think they...

    OH Sandy (storm chasers update)

storm work I don't chase storm work. We are slammed as it is. I will do storm work if it is local and of course take care of my clients. It's all about getting paid. Most of my clients pay what I bill them, for the rest If they don't sign my proposal I move on. Their tree isn't on my house. I...

You did what for sycamore firewood?

sycamore? second pic in first series looks like a london plane tree, same family. If you are going to dabble in tree work you and your crew should wear all the required ppg. it would be tough explaining to your wife how you killed her father because he didn't have a hard hat on. think about it.

    Black Locust

locust samples Great suggestion. I would do it if I had alot of locust, it's probably only 3-4 cord and landscape mulch is easier money than firewood. I will actually be grinding up about half of my stockpiled oak in December. the pile is to big and to old.

    Black Locust

locust I sell alot of firewood. people want oak. so I put all my locust logs (20-36"dbh) in the softwood pile to be ground into landscape mulch. it's a shame, but I actually lost a couple of firewood clients because i mixed locust in with their delivery. They thought I was trying to rip them...

    lifespan of a climber

climbing longevity at 55, i have been climbing for 25yrs. +/-. I love to climb and derive great satisfaction from "a tree well pruned". I stopped climbing to work on my company rather than in it. That is the hardest tree that I have ever had to climb. I miss the days of climbing and draggin'...

    swelling of scarlet ok twigs

I have several clients with scarlet oaks that are in decline. twigs in the canopy are swollen along their length, fairly uniformly. I suspect a wasp and am leaning towards systemic control. I pruned out the deadwood last fall and most of the swollen twigs. the tree has not leafed out well this...

    Newb grinder open to advice

stumps Ground the biggest stump I've ever done the other day with my rayco super junior (green teeth), took me five hours. It was an oak about 5' across, some rot. I got $450. I got $2,800, osterville, to take the tree down, it took about seven hours. I view stump grinding as a pita, but it...

    Hope I don't regret this

leading a horse to water My youngest son's friend was in a similar situation, father no good, mother doesn't care, a young man adrift with no education or moral direction. My oldest son, who will be taking over the business, gave him a job. taught him how to be an awesome ground guy, prepared...

mulch from the spoils of tree work

We have about 4k/cy of landscape mulch at our shop. I spread about six yards around my house today. wow! the quality of the mulch is shredded not "wood chippy", no big chunks, and the color is a chestnut brown. I am very impressed with the quality of the product. I am looking to sell 2-3k yards...
