Makita DCS540 and 520i -- sudden hard starting with kickback

belated thanks to Roll Tide and alexcagle!! Nice to learn about the consequences of fuel pressure fluctuation. I'd been using regular gas 89 octane 10% ethanol, and that with temperature changes may have been the problem. Once the saws warmed up and pressure in the fuel tank equalized, they ran...

Makita DCS540 and 520i -- sudden hard starting with kickback

I have two Makitas, a 520i and a 540. From the beginning they were very reliable at starting, often on the 1st pull, even on old gas after a few months non-use. I'm pretty sure I had rebuilt one or both them, with new pistons and rings, and possibly new seals for one of them. (Sorry, but I can't...

    Dolmar 7900 Carb upgrade?

the carb has to breathe into the crankcase volume, and the crankcase volume has to exhale through the inlet ports -- IMHO it might be that the cfm of the carb actually needs to match the crankcase volume -- the crankcase pulls a vacuum which then draws the carb -- it only has so much volume...

What model Dolmar is this one?

by looks it might be equivalent to makita DS520 -- if that's the case, they're great saws -- it's easy to open up muffler and pull the nickers off the carb pins to open up the fuel flow (prevent going lean when under load) -- mine start on first pull even after stitting in a barn for a few...

    Ignition coil weirdness

It's an electronic coil, e.g., no points, sealed enclosure, $70, etc. Is there a way to tell if an electronic coil is good, outside the box -- maybe with a diode/transistor checker etc?

Stihl slams Lowes & Home Depot

My apostasy >> the CFOs at Stihl are starting to sweat their little LBOs off, and so they need to convince their Wall Street "bosses" that the growing Makita-Dolmar product-distribution line is not the real threat, so they launch a "successful" attack against Lowes etc. Though I will have to...

    Ignition coil weirdness

The ignition system on an older Makita 520i gave out on me in the middle of a cut. I never saw a happy saw go so quiet so fast as that. Usually, it just sets right up, and starts to aringing and asinging, when I put it in some wood ...) A quick check showed no spark, so I changed plugs, to...

    Dolmar 7900

*If* the 7900 is closed port then, as to 7300 or 7900 it's a no brainer as bwalker said. But, is the 7900 is closed port? It's hard to get an answer. There are posts all over the map on this one. one says, 6400s are closed, another they are open. Note the silence of domar_tech on the...

    Dolmar 7900

closed transfer ports v. open Anybody know if the cylinder construction on the 7900s has open or closed transfer ports? Somewhere, I read a thread that said the 6400 and 7900 saws (I think it was a Makita thread) were open port transfers-with one ring pistons, and the 7300 was a closed port...

    Dolmar 7900

I did the same thing on one of my 540s, which after I drilled out of the basket inside the muffler and opened up the outlet, felt like it was starving on the intake side. So, I cut a 1/4" x 3" slot on the back of the cover, with a heated razor knife, and champhered the edges with a file. The...

Would I Make A Good Abhorist?

... and a pair of trampolenes aside from running his saw a little on the lean side, what "gypo" doesn't tell you in this picture is that while he was abhoristing up this tree, he was also working between two trampolenes. there's something that rhymes between a tree and a trampolene, but I...

    fuel octane

May be slightly off topic, but I recall having peeked into this a few years back, as there is a tank farm right around the corner from me. To my shock--nowadays (as opposed to 15 years ago) all gas is the supposedly the same, as to the gasoline part that is. The difference between brands...

    GB Pro-Top bars

I had the same experience, with a 24" protop and an 18" solid, both in 3/8x.050. First week of use and the rails had picked up a snaggable notch (fingernail test). Used carlton chain. But after the first dressing, it now seems rock hard? I don't understand--maybe it didn't like getting...

I have a new Notch Cut For you

Rocking!!! that whole thing gave me the image of the *tree "deciding" to go the wrong way -- it could have easily picked up that little toyota like it was a leaf ("with its hub locks on - LOL) and slung it over top of the tree and into the next county--like one of those catapults the Wisconsin-...

    topping off a stump....

stumps !! think in pieces -- divide and conquer. I use the biggest saw I can, with smallest bar that'll do the job. no need to get all the way across the stump in one cut - with a short bar (eve less than 1/2 diameter) you can sort of tilt the tip of the bar down a little, and work around a...

My Husband Poisoned the Oak, Can I still save it??

I don't know how fast sap flows in oak trees (what is the velocity of an oak sap?) --- but when I did the drill and inject method to some vines (with Lesco's Prosecutor, not Roundup) and it took a couple of days for the thick liquid to be absorbed. Just wondering if it would hurt to take a 1"...

file guide "clamp on bar type"

0.02 is about where I have observed the chain getting rough, so I try to set them a little tighter. After I've rocked a chain, I used to file all the cutters sharp (e.g. remove the scoring on the top of the cutter), and then trim back the lengths to match. Now, what I think I'll do is leave...

file guide "clamp on bar type"

A local Stihl dealer has a Stihl-brand clamp-on -- which sells, so he says, for $300.00+. I can't imagine it ... The 050 gauge Husky file guide pictured above does the trick for me. Lowes sells then with a file and handle for ?-$7 I think. The rollers hold the file up to set the correct...

What makes square chisel so efficient?

a cutter with a perfectly square chisel would take only one-pass per cut of a grain-thread, if you think of grain threads going vertically up a tree. or better said, each pass of a perfectly square cutter would take out x-number of grain threads, cutting each grain thread to full kerf width...

    clutch removal tool

make one in a few minutes with a hacksaw and a file, from an extra socket ... initially the 520 had a 2-shoe clutch, the 540 a 3-shoe one. I stuff a straight stub of 7/16 rope, with the end rounded off with a hotknife, into the spark plug hole to block the piston.
