best thoughts on a small homemade kiln??

I have a crude kiln. It's basically an 8'x12' shed with 8' ceiling height. I sealed it up inside but haven't insulated it. It has a dehumidifier that runs constantly, and dries 1000bf of hard maple in 3-4 weeks to below 10%. There's no auxiliary heat, but there is a an extra fan to circulate...

    Custom built sawmill

Could you maybe use one of those Haddon Lumber Maker jigs with a 70-80cc chainsaw & 36" bar? Make a couple wood cradles to rest the log well off the ground, and you would be free to rip the log in two, then into quarters. The quarters of a 36" log will give you 4 roughly 12sq" cants. Couldn't...

    Newest Toy... The 084!!!

I love my 084, although I rarely use it. I bought it for quartering large logs to fit on my band saw mill. I fired it up over the weekend for the first time in a couple years, and it started in just a couple pulls. I split a 20" south TX mesquite in a few seconds, like it was butter. The log was...

    Apple?! Who knew?

There's curly all through that wood. It's being masked by the saw marks. In the branch section, it's fiddleback, and can be seen perpendicular to the saw marks. Most of the mottle curl is on the convex curve, and can be seen through the saw cut because it runs at an angle, and the saw cut runs...

661 in some spalted maple pics

Love it! Maple is an awesome hardwood. It has such a broad variation in grain & color. It offers pretty much every figure type you can think of, and many different colors. Your log looks to be a beauty.

Old red cedar is it worth milling

I milled a cedar that was standing dead in a cemetery for nearly a century, according to the old trustee. It was very dry, and very solid all the way through. Best cedar I have ever milled. Made this TV stand from it. Used alligator juniper for the doors & back.

    Woodmizer fun

That's some great looking persimmon. I have been on the watch for a good persimmon log but no luck. Great logs, just little or no color. Yours look great.

Forest Improvement Hard Maple Chainsawmilling Pics

If it were 1.375"+ thick, I woulda been a solid interest. You should have no issue selling it. It looks nice. It reminds me of massur birch more than birds eye maple, though it certainly is maple. If you find more like that, and it's thicker, let me know!

This weekend's start of a huge milling effort! White Oak

If he spends $100 or so on a DH, and it's junk after drying the wood, it was a good price to pay, IMO.

Want to Sell Stihl 066 magnum

Me too! I was seriously considering, but still on the fence. Can't justify the need, but dang it was too cheap to not tempt.

Milling Parallel to Pith or Bark for Best Grain?

I do my quarter sawing parallel to the bark. The log lies flat on the mill, and the blade starts into the small end just below the pith. I remove the bottom half and flip the top half over and repeat. This gives me a wedge shaped slab from the center of the log, pith centered. What I am left...

    The Chicom knock-off industry...

If the saws are like anything else, it is a hit/miss kinda deal. It looks like they are using outdated technology to manufacture saws that are no longer produced by the originators. Same thing happens with computers, TV's, audio equipment, etc. The technology might be outdated but still...

Where do I go from here?

I picked up a used 170 from the local saw shop for around $100, thinking it might be a cheap way to see if I like chainsaw carving. Turns out I don't. But golly do I use the heck out of that lil saw! Very handy around the house and as a 'toss in the truck in case i see a burl' saw. If it weren't...
