Burning Mulberry for the first time

Well I read about it, I was told about it, but till its sitting on a hot bed of coals in front of you, you really don't know what they mean by "very sparky" ! Wow this stuff is crazy, like how it burns, but I'm afraid to open the stove door!

    Wood ID . . . Locust?

Found this tree blown over, got permission to cut it up. Felt kind of light but I think its Locust, am I wrong? And of course I forgot the small branch I laid in the grass but I looked up Locust leafs on google and they look just like what I was seeing.

If you were to buy a 14" chainsaw

Yeah I've been told before that the 20" bar is too much, its how I bought it and its how I left it. I think if I would drop to an 18" bar the thoughts of the smaller saw would go away and I would be happy. Plus its cheaper! Thanks guys for the recommendations.

If you were to buy a 14" chainsaw

I currently own a Stihl 290 with a 20" bar. Bought it used two years ago and has worked without a hitch since. I would like to add a smaller saw to the arsenal but I am def. a newbie to the saw industry. I would like a smaller saw to cut smaller stuff and then move to the 290 once I reach the...

    Soft Maple for firewood

I had a cord or Silver Maple last year. I used it in March. Burned hot, ignited VERY easily, but burns fast. Ended up making two fires a day, one in the morning and one after work. I wish I would have kept all of it and split it smaller all for starter wood. Mixed in you probably wont...

Four different wood ID for you guys!

I'm the one who posted this thread . . . I'm sorry to disappoint the guy who thinks 4 and 5 are Mulberry. . . 4 and 5 are not Mulberry, I have 3 cords of Mulberry. I agree it looks like it but it never got sappy around the edges when I cut it. I cut a ton of Mulberry and this isn't it...

Four different wood ID for you guys!

Thanks guys, my thoughts were this, and it was from quick simple research on google. I wasn't sure what any of them were except for the last pic, to me it looked like all the hard maple pics I saw.

First fire and one question . . .

Things still seem good. A bit of smoke out the top of the chimney, but nothing to be concerned about. Fire is still going great. Basement is already 15 degrees warmer and the house is 5 degrees warmer. I think i read too much info on the temp "should be" 300-500. Every application is...

First fire and one question . . .

It hit the mid 20's here and I said enough is enough, were firing up the stove! Brand new EPA stove, first fire in it tonight, first wood stove in the home, and a question . . . Got everything up and running, let the flue get up too about 400 and started closing things down after about 45...

    cold air return to woodstove?

Not sure on how far away you have to be, I've always heard 10ft from guys on the threads. I'm an HVAC tech and I've seen returns directly over wood stoves only 3-4ft about the stove drawing in the hot air. Is it to code or legal, not sure. My set up is a wood stove in a finished basement with...

    Floor to ceiling clearance

I emailed the company and told them that I fall two inches short, they told me I was fine and they are sending me an exempt letter for my insurance company. I was a happy man to hear that! They told me that 84" was a standard measurement they use and 82" would not pose a problem. upidstay: how...

    concret block chimney

mine was 25ft high and I had a stucco look done to the outside, he dug and pored the footer. It cost me $1800. But I had other quotes at $2300. But this guy was state registered and gave me all his insurance info. So not only was he the most trust worthy but the best price as well. I got lucky...

    Floor to ceiling clearance

I'm two inches short. STORY OF MY LIFE, haha. Ok the stove manufacture that I was going to purchase from wants 84" from the floor to the ceiling. And I'm at 82". My basement is finished with with drywall on the ceilings. My question is . . . Does anyone else have a low height clearance...

    Furnace retrofit?

agree with the previous post. Unlike A/C you don't need return air to be comfortable. But the furnace needs it to be comfortable. Just make sure like previously stated doors are open because it will take the path least resistant. Just make sure you use a filter to block dust/dirt. I'm an HVAC...

    MS 290 issue

Thanks guys cut up a lot of wood yesterday and the saw worked great. As far as warranty goes, I bought it used, i think its 2-3 years old at this point, not sure. But the hole was clogged up, and did so twice yesterday, but I did cut for 2-3 hours. Another pickup bed, and 5x8 trailer stacked...
