    Stihl MS241C-M vs Husqvarna 543XP

If the saw is to compliment a 362 and the only reason for it is delimbing and lighter weight, I'd skip both the 241 and the 543xp. Both are just silly expensive for what they are. The 241 is almost a 346xp/550xp weight wise, with less power and $550 by the time you add in taxes and an extra...

    Redmax

Redmax saws are some of the best bang for the buck you can get. Pro saw case and cylinder for home owner stihl and husky prices. My only complaints are the choke mechanism is a bit flimsy and I don't like the fuel and oil caps on the 4000 and 4300. Operationally, my chimp tweaked GZ4000 is...

    have a 550xp want a 562xp

I'll echo the others here, the 562 isn't a huge jump up from the 550. Go for the 372xp and toss a 24" bar on it. A 550xp with a 16" or 18" and a 372xp with a 24" will handle the vast majority of the trees out there.

Price of a cord of wood?

It's Michigan, we have lots of trees and are dealing with Oak Wilt and the Ash Borer. Logging and forest products is the third largest industry in the state too. http://lansing.craigslist.org/search/sss?query=firewood&sort=rel

Price of a cord of wood?

$50-55 a face cord picked up and $60 to $70 delivered for dry mixed hardwood is pretty typical for Michigan outside of urban areas.

cutting 50" trunk with a 27" bar question

If your depth gauges aren't too aggressive there should be no problem working both sides of the bar and tip while buried in the cut. If it's jumpy and grabby something is not right.

cutting 50" trunk with a 27" bar question

Either you are not plunge cutting properly by starting with the bottom of the tip and rolling the bar in, or your rakers are way too low and aggressive. As others have noted, no need to plunge cut a trunk you are blocking down. Just a standard notch and backcut will be fine. It's also much...

Removing trees with a light touch within parkland

I agree from a practicality stand point, a feller buncher will be able to direct felling and work efficiently with some soil/road impact. From a sensitivity aspect, they will look like a horrific tree mangling monster to the average bystander. For PR purposes, I too think a bucket truck and...

Removing trees with a light touch within parkland

What is the terrain like where they will be working and what is the plan for the wood? Are they coming out because they are old hazard trees, for revenue or for land clearing? Is it a select cut to thin an existing wooded area? Stumps staying in place or are there plans to grind? Lots of...

    Cheapest wedges?

Work on technique, you don't have to bury the whole bar in everything you cut. If you are unsure of the stresses a limb is under, cut with the end of the bar while you read what it's doing. If it starts to pinch, keep the throttle pinned and pull back. If you don't give a cut the full bar to...

Forest Service Volunteer/Stihl String Trimmer Choices

What type of vegitation are you trimming and what is the terrain like? Are there lots of narrow bridges, boardwalks and rocky drops and water bars? If it's mostly soft green vegetation, I prefer a walk behind mower type trimmer like the DR. It's faster and much less work than a hand held trimmer.

    Full-blown newb advice

Not trying to shoot him out of the saddle, just trying to get him to understand the safety aspect of what he's doing. Things go wrong very quickly and cause great harm if not done properly. A little bit of guidance goes a long way if one can find it. Also, I've found that dealing with land...

Best small saw for the light work.

Redmax GZ4000 with a muff mod or worked over by the chimp is nice. Good price too!

    Best budget chain grinder?

This fall got pretty busy for me, I had more cutting side jobs and wood deliveries that I could have imagined. As a result, I'm in the market for a chain grinder as my sharpening needs have really changed. Yes I can hand file, but it's not always practical, especially when you are resurrecting...

Lets do a SugiHara bar blowout!

I'm game if it is, could have used a 20" for the 372.

    best 35-40cc saw

The GZ4000 is a great little saw, light, nimble and powerful, like a 40CC should be. I agree, the Dolmar 420/421 is a nice saw, but it's too heavy for the class.

Another this vs that thread...just have to ask

I would have gone 555 long before a Stihl 390/391. $80 more gets you autotune 2lbs lighter, magnesium case, etc. Of course I've become a little snobbish in my saw ownership, the Stihl will work just fine for a long time, it just won't have the chain speed and will weigh 2lbs more.
